Just read this on a movie site and I reread it to be sure but Jonny depp is playing tonto.
They havn't gotten a lead for the lone ranger as of yet but I'm just kindda floored that depp is playing tonto.
Here's an exerpt from the article:
Pirates of the Caribbean helmer Gore Verbinski and star Johnny Depp are reuniting for a new Disney feature film adaptation of the vintage radio property The Lone Ranger. Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer will oversee the new Lone Ranger film, which will star Johnny Depp, who will portray the masked man’s Indian sidekick Tonto
Now mind you maybe I am more racist than I thought but c'mon people can't they find a good looking YOUNG native american to reprise the silverheels role?
I went to a website dedicated to native actors and there are plenty of them. This IMO!!< please note opinion> is almnost as bad as the spanish guy from the village people running around in a cermonial headdress pretending to be native american just cause he's dark skinned.
Then again it's disney so they can pretty much do anything I guess.

File this under the 'Spidey is a white guy catagory' :-)
Seriously I doubt the story since a) Depp doesn't play second fiddle (which face it, Tonto is) and b) you're right, there are a lot more first peoples actors now who could play the role.

I have serious doubts about the authenticity of this, given that 99% of all "Johnny Depp is playinig _____" rumors turn out to be utter BS. And I also can't really see Tim Burton doing a Lone Ranger film. And aren't Depp and Burton pretty much mandated as a "both or neither" type of deal?
It only goes one way. Burton always works with Depp, but Depp often works sans Burton.

Agreed wholeheartedly on everything but the Natives term. My own Panamanian background is speaking here- in my household Indian meant something VERY different, as did Native. I prefer to call someone by the tribe from which they originate, if they truly seek to make an issue. My wife is far more...crude...on the issue, which I find disturbing due to her own (insert name of Native American tribe here) blood.

So what tribe was Tonto? Does anyone know? My Lone Ranger Lore is (sorrowfully) weak. Edit: Wiki says he's Potawatomi, which makes no sense geographically. "Hmm, me ride long way to find Lone Ranger." :-)
(amusingly stereotyping aside. Asians still seem to be pretty interchangable. I mean Kelly Hu (yum!) is from Hawaii, but has played Japanese/Chinese/N. Korean characters, Linda Park (Double Yum!) played Hoshi Sato (Japanese) and Grace Park (Tripple Yum) is of Korean descent and is playing a Hawaiian. That's not counting male actors. Soon-Tek Oh I think has played a role from every ethnic group in Asia.)

I can tell the difference, and people from Asia can tell the difference and they find it very insulting.
All you need to do is look at the outrage that the Memoirs of a Geisha stirred up (Wiki....Link), because they used chinese actresses instead of Japanese.
So for those of us that live in Asia or close enough to Asia that being able to tell the difference between Chinese, Japanese and Koreans as well as Malays, Indonesians, Vietnamese is a matter of being polite and being good neighbours.

There used to be a website, theyalllookalike.com or something like that which allowed you to 'quiz' yourself on Asian ethnic groups. I can say that I scored the highest of the non-Asian KotE players at the time.
I can see being offended. As much as I have grown to enjoy Cote de Pablo, I was kind of hurt that a Semetic actress wasn't playing the Mossad agent.

So is reason A why Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" was actually "The Mad Hatter in Wonderland with some chick named Alice?"
Seriously, I'm so over the bromance between Depp and Burton.
As for this, I'd be interested in a Lone Ranger movie (why is he the Lone Ranger, anyway? After all, Tonto's there...) where Tonto is actually the brains behind the operation, with the LR just shooting where he's pointed.
