¨Provoking¨ means that enemies whose threat zone you are in get to take an AoO (if they have one remaining). Since you aren`t in his threat zone, he can`t respond to your provocation in any way.
Strike Back only let`s you READY an attack, it doesn`t allow AoO`s.
So it doesn`t matter whether you are provoking or not / have Improved Disarm or not,
the only way he´s Sundering your Longspear is with a READIED Action.
BTW, there`s no way that ANYBODY with ANY weapon can Sunder on an AoO: Sunder is an Attack Action.
Strike Back (Combat)
You can strike at foes that attack you using their superior reach, by targeting their limbs or weapons as they come at you.
Prerequisite: Base attack bonus +11.
Benefit: You can ready an action to make a melee attack against any foe that attacks you in melee, even if the foe is outside of your reach.
Personally, I think it`s a pitiful Feat as written, but if it was Errata´d to allow AoO`s against Reach Weapons/Natural Reach it would be worthwhile to take. I`m pretty sure Paizo staff (James Jacobs?) chimed in on this and specifically affirmed that you can`t take AoO`s with Strike Back (being as that would `take away the advantages of Reach`).
Anyways, long story short, Reach Weapons are a GREAT way to deliver Maneuvers because you don`t need the Improved Maneuver Feats to avoid the AoO. Of course, you need a Trip quality Reach Weapon to Trip, and otherwise you can normally only Disarm (any attack) or Sunder (attack action) with a Reach Weapon.

I thought you could make a trip with any weapon, and trip weapons just give you the option of dropping them if you fail by too much instead of falling yourself?

Greetings, fellow travellers.
To answer your question, Interzone: if your weapon does not have the trip quality you do not / can not perform a trip attempt with your wielded weapon, you perform the trip attempt with any body part of yours (arm, leg, hand, foot, what-not).
See the various trip-centered discussions on the forums.

That would be a valid interpretation of the current RAW.
I was basing my statement on posts from Paizo staff like James Jacobs who have spoken to the RAI.But this issue has LONG been known, yet the rules have still not been Errata´d to clearly express that RAI.
And as far as I`m aware, the ´clarification´ coming from Paizo (James Jacobs) wasn`t even so clear as to whether you can use UNARMED STRIKE to deliver Trips (Monk Flurrys specifically can, but in general cases). Though the current RAW doesn`t say anything which suggests UAS are anything special re: Trip, so I suppose one could err on the side of UAS -not- being special (but then one can just as easily use the RAW as-is without James´ vague advice, and allow ANY weapon to Trip, if you´re so inclined)
So I personally have no problem with playing as you suggest,
I was just giving advice in sync with how Paizo themselves recommend the rules work.
I do think that a BETTER situation to the one you describe would be if ANY weapon used to Trip can be dropped,
but Trip weapons receive a +2 bonus, i.e. like Disarm weapons... But that`s obviously house-rule territory.
In any case, it`s trivially easy to pick Reach Weapons with the Trip quality if you´re interested in that option. In the APG and Adventurer´s Armory there´s even some nice options with decent damage, decent Crit range AND the Trip quality.
