Had a discussion with a colleague tonight about just exactly how the Stand Still feat technically works and we both came to a different interpretation.
I've always interpreted the text to read that the feat was triggered when an opponent literally tried to move through your adjacent squares. If an opponent was already in one of your adjacent squares and simply retreated (moved straight back from you), then a normal AoO was triggered (excluding a withdraw action of course). His interpretation is that any movement in an adjacent square triggers the feat.
I'd never thought of it that way before, which brings me to this post: which is it?

It's odd phrasing, but note the final sentence of the feat. If an opponent is in one of your adjacent squares and moves away from you, without withdrawing or making a 5' step, he provokes an attack of opportunity from you as normal and you can use Stand Still as the attack.
So your colleague seems to be correct in the end. If the creature moves from one adjacent square to another, provoking AoO, the feat applies due to the first sentence. If it moves from an adjacent square to a non-adjacent square in such a way that it provokes an AoO, the feat applies due to the last sentence. That covers all possible provoking movement in an adjacent square.

I do like it better that way. It makes sense that you'd have to literally withdraw or 5-foot step to extricate yourself safely.
Another thing that I'm not clear on (after having re-read it this time), is when you take the attack of opportunity, is it do-able with a weapon in your hand (like Disarm) or do you literally just roll a straight-up CMB check (like Bull Rush)? I'd like to think that you can make the AoO with a weapon, and then apply any and all bonuses you'd otherwise have with the weapon (such as weapon focus, enhancement, etc.)?
The CMB rules on p.199 say: "When you attempt to perform a combat maneuver, make an attack roll and add your CMB in place of your normal attack bonus. Add any bonuses you currently have on attack rolls due to spells, feats, and other affects. These bonuses must be applicable to the weapon or attack used to perform the maneuver."
So I'm assuming that you can use a weapon with Stand Still (since AoOs are normally made with a weapon), and other affects includes: weapon enhancement, Weapon Focus (as opposed to combat specific maneuver feats like Imp. Disarm, etc.), flanking, higher ground, and so on.

If someone draws an attack of opportunity through movement they can be Stand Stilled.
Stand Still (Combat)
You can stop foes that try to move past you.
Prerequisites: Combat Reflexes.
Benefit: When a foe provokes an attack of opportunity due to moving through your adjacent squares, you can make a combat maneuver check as your attack of opportunity. If successful, the enemy cannot move for the rest of his turn. An enemy can still take the rest of his action, but cannot move. This feat also applies to any creature that attempts to move from a square that is adjacent to you if such movement provokes an attack of opportunity.
