Oh, and for the level I'd prefer 1st, but I can run it for 5th level characters if everyone is sick of playing newbies.

I am all for starting off at 1st level, but am okay if the group would prefer 5th level.

Here is the ice mage so far. Background forthcoming.

Yes 1st level will be great . Still brainstorming but I have a pretty good grasp of the character's personality so it shouldn't take too long.

Background is complete and makes sense (to me at least) . Now working on the point-buy

I'm fine with starting at 1st level; I like starting from the ground up, and the first few levels go by quick anyway.

And I think I've confused everyone about my character. I'll be playing a half-orc summoner. His father was the bard. :D

Oops. Okay. I'll sort it all out when the full characters get in. :)

As per normal starting wealth

As an aside, the theatre company is paying you 500gp each, payable in one year, for your work on the play. In the meantime, you each get 3sp a week, plus food and lodging. Oh, and the Summoner gets paid twice (once for him, once for the eidelon).

Scarab Sages

You're welcome :) I've always liked and read a lot of mythology , though I only read the Kalevala a few years ago . I'm studying storytelling and storytellers for my Masters' (in Anthropology) . Not sure about the first name , maybe Peer Gynt ? Unless it's a character in the Kalevala I've forgotten about.

Trying to pick traits for my character and Devotee of the Green makes the most sense as one of them . The character was born and lived most of her life in Whistledown where she socialized a good deal with the gnomes , particularly eager to listen to tales of gnome adventurers as a child, despite being human and eventually found a gnome cleric of Shelyn who tutored her early on after she had been (apparently) divinely inspired. Prior to that she was careful to follow the advice of gnome storytellers about respecting the landscape since it was connected to the fairy folk (or so they said anyway , but then gnomes would say that).

She then moved to Maganimar as one of the closest large cities with a theatre and (more than likely) a temple to Shelyn so she could continue her training and be ordained .

Although still considered a 'country bumpkin' by many city-dwellers it seemed to make sense to take Cosmopolitan to reflect her broadening knowledge of the world . In some ways (for the gnomes and probably the elves as well) I think Shelyn is also a nature deity , so it made sense but I won't be stressing the 'faerie' aspect over her role as an inspirator/artist/goddess of love

From Maganimar she's likely to have seen a position advertised as a cleric to a theatre company only to realise the distance between Maganimar and Whitethrone some time after she'd agreed to go there...

Does that make sense ? I'm struggling to think of another appropriate trait , though I did take Ease of Faith to reflect a multi-cultural approach to religion

It's just a finnish name that means blizzard or snowstorm.

Ease of Faith and Devotee of the Green are both faith traits. You can only have one trait from any given category. Have you looked at the social traits or the religion trait for Shelyn?

Scarab Sages

Oops , I had missed that . I think I'll just take Charming alongside one of them :) Is there a Shelyn-specific trait ? I couldn't find it in the SRD , but I think I'll be alright with Charming anyway.

Didn't know that about your character's first name . Interesting and fitting

Strong point... okay APG classes get a flat 150gp.

Scarab Sages

The character is done , I just need to upload her character sheet on to the message boards (or I can send it to your Uriel)

She's not really 'combat-worthy' at all (except as a support character with spells and abilities) since high social skills (Int , Wis ,Cha) made much more sense for the concept I had in mind so hopefully the 'modicum of vicious and deadly combat' will be some time in coming.

On the other hand I think she makes a good character for the negotiation/social side of the game and should bring some useful skills . Ultimately I also hope you will like the character in-game (which is really the most important) !

This brings up two good points:

First, if you have Hero Lab, please email me your character portfolio. That makes it a lot easier to import into d20pro. If you don't have Hero Lab, you can email it to me, or post it on the boards, or make an alias, whatever you find easier.

Second, walking down the street in Whitethrone on an average day you can expect to encounter Trolls, Worgs, all sorts of other "monsters", sorcerers, and armed guards, all of whom have no problem killing you (or worse!) for the least perceived insult. Thus, even if your party consisted of nothing but combat-spec'd badasses, you'd still have to step pretty lightly at first level. Thus, the combat in this game will be more a sense of tension, and when blood is split it will be brutal, and hopefully you're well-prepared. Picture a fantasy movie directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Actually APG does list starting wealth for each of the new classes on Pg 25. It's also in each class entry on D20PFsrd.org including the average.

Class Starting Wealth Average
Alchemist 3d6 × 10 gp 105 gp
Cavalier 5d6 × 10 gp 175 gp
Inquisitor 4d6 × 10 gp 140 gp
Oracle 3d6 × 10 gp 105 gp
Summoner 2d6 × 10 gp 70 gp
Witch 3d6 × 10 gp 105 gp

I see what you mean . It's definitely something I'll bear in mind as the game progresses . I think it might be interesting to play up the 'culture shock' aspect of Whitethrone for my character early on but she'll definitely try to adapt once it becomes clear that the city can in fact be deadly. Suddenly the Protection domain sounds like a wise choice ;)

I've just sent my character sheet through email . Looking to add it on the boards as well but I haven't figured out how to get the character section to show up once you create an alias (which I've also been having technical problems with , not sure why).

Hopefully it is complete . Feedback welcome and I'm definitely looking forward to the game !

I can't make it every Sunday (I work retail) but I can make it at least two or three times a month.

Once you create an alias, click on create a profile inside that alias. Then fill in the blanks, save your changes, fill in the "About alias" section, saving changes often, then save your changes, save your changes, save your changes. In case I haven't mentioned it, you need to save your changes often.

The more the merrier (especially as so many people seem unable to commit to online games...), and you can find the "Player's Guide" here.

We're scheduled to play at 5pm Eastern on Sundays, but don't sweat it if you can't play every time. As long as you can play at least twice a month, it's fine.

On the technical side, we'll be using Ventrillo and d20pro, with Skype and Google docs for back-up. Please send me your character (exported to d20pro format if you have Hero Labs) to uriel222@yahoo.ca. We currently have an alchemist, a Summoner, A cleric and an Icemage (sorcerer).

Silver Crusade

A few quick things:

Who doesn't have a d20pro license? I have two guest passes, but everyone else will have to pay the $10 license fee to d20pro.

Does everyone have a working microphone? Are you comfortable with Ventrillo? Does anyone have a vent server?

I'll be busy this Sunday, and, unfortunately, the next (my work's x-mas party, then my wife's) but I'm looking to get in two sessions on the 12th and 19th of December, and then regularly in the New Year. Once I have everyone's characters and backgrounds, I'm going to be posting some background material to keep up interest, mostly dealing with how you came to Whitethrone.

One last thing: is there any topic you'd rather not see in-game? I generally don't go much darker in my games than the typical fantasy novel (sometimes Edgar Allen Poe, but rarely), but if anyone has a particularly touchy subject feel free to send me an email and let me know to steer clear.

I don't have a licence but I'm planning to get one so someone else can have the guest passes. This sounds good for the schedule and I'm glad we're not starting straight away as I need to sort out my essay writing before the holidays. 12th of December and 19th will be fine , and afterwards obviously.

Yes I do have a microphone , haven't tried Ventrillo yet but I will be installing it

Typical fantasy or even Edgar Allan Poe style gothic horror is fine by me . I wouldn't want to go darker than that , although I was fine with the level of gruesomeness in Hook Mountain Massacre because it was done in a parodic style . I guess it come down to how you describe things .

Thanks drayen. I think I've got it now.

I've refined the Charm domain into the Love subdomain (from the SRD/APG) since I sent my character sheet but it's otherwise unchanged . The last cosmetic addition I need to make are names for Artemisia's family members and mentors , but I'm having fun going with the 'I've always wanted to be an adventurer' concept . A good family name also eludes me at the moment

The Aspiring Bard trait is also from the APG/SRD

Have a working mic, but I do not have a vent server. I'd have to set up vent on my comp before signing in.

Pop top baby heads as refreshments is probably too far over the line, unless you've figured out how to tastefully incorporate them into a scene. Otherwise, I know that Whitethrone is a hive of scum and villiany and expect uncouth behaviour.

Thanks :) I've been living in Britain for a while (this is my fifth year) but I'm actually from Luxembourg so it's just a habit . I've got a rough and ready knowledge of imperial measurements though . I know what you mean about stones , they are well confusing

She ought to be 5' 7" and roughly 145 pounds according to a currency converter website . I'll make changes for ease of perusal :) Where did you go in Britain ? I'm in West London but my heart is really in Lancashire , it's a lovely area "up north" as they say (and I have many good memories of being a student at Lancaster)

The Love subdomain is one of those obvious things that I didn't pick up early on but it does make perfect sense for this character :) I also like the Purity subdomain , it has a great 'cursebreaker'/fairy godmother/White Mage vibe that I think fits the character

Penny for your thoughts about a last name/relatives' names/mentor name (should be a female gnome) ? That'd be great

Well, as I've used Finnish names for my character and plan to use them for the names in my character background, thus making Finnish culture the official and canon Irrisen convention, I suggest raiding Finnish name sites. At the very least Baltic names would work.

I like your idea and I think it's fitting. I think it makes sense to imagine that her mentor the cleric of Shelyn may have adventured in (or possibly be from) Irrisen before they settled in Whistledown as a kind of retirement . So she'll probably have a Finnish or Scandinavian name

Decided to go with a more traditional English name for Artemisia (the first name was an hommage to the great Renaissance painter Artemisia Gentilleschi which survived my concept-shift from artisan to would-be-adventurer) . Hazelhurst (Hazelwood) seems to fit because of the whole association with nature and the gnomes and also the whole 'spellbreaker' theme (beliefs about witch hazel). Pity it doesn't quite roll off the tongue , oh well

I'm impressed by your road trip across the UK , I haven't seen nearly as much of it in 5 years myself ! I've not really seen much of London but I like it as well , I also really liked Glasgow and might move to Edinburgh next year if I get funding for a PhD . I'm pleased that you're enthusiastic about it , so far all my information about it has come from hearsay but it sounds like a great place to live. Cardiff...Never been there but I really enjoy Welsh poetry and what little I know about life/customs in Wales so I'm planning to visit at some stage.

Edits now in place , with slightly more added background to flesh them out

I don't have a d20Pro license, but am willing to purchase one if there is no guest pass remaining. I'd be able to upgrade from a player to GM license at later date, wouldn't I? I do have a microphone, and am familiar with Vent usage, though I don't have access to a server.

At the moment the schedule for the first sessions seems good to me, though my holiday plans are not yet finalized; my home recently suffered fairly severe flood damage from a broken water line, and repairs will not be completed in time for Christmas. My family and I all have places to stay, but it spoiled our plans rather effectively. We'll probably end up spending the week with relatives out of state. I'll let you know if I end up unable to participate on Sunday the 19th.

Typical fantasy themes with a dash of Poe sounds good to me. I can't think of anything that would truly be off-putting at the moment, though if something does arise, I'll be sure to speak up.

I'm going to keep working on my summoner, but I'm starting to hit a wall with the concept. Things aren't quite meshing as I had hoped. I might consider something else, as we've got enough time for me to start a character from scratch. What's the party's current class composition?

Hey, don't let these Americans bully you! The States is the only place on Earth that insists a system of 12 inches to a foot, 3 feet to a yard, 1760 yards to a mile is "simple"... :)

Oh, and since you're coming from all over, don't worry too much about Slavic names. The local ruling class should have them (I'm using Russian ones, because I find the Lapp ones too hard to spell...), the underclass have Nordic ones, and the monsters... well...

I'm putting together a more "physical" party memeber - either a monk, a bard, a rogue or a fighter. Leaning toward a monk/rogue (acrobat) dual class later down the road. (Though a Magician Bard would certainly compliment the spell-cast heavy party) What kind of character are you thinking you want if not the Summoner?

Not true. You go to Britain all the road signs are in miles. No conversion math necessary. They still use standard lengths of measurements. Of course, they still use pints, quarts and gallons, too. Ah, pints...

Of course, I would stay with an ice theme. It was what led me too thinking about it. From what other posters have said, you can swap out energy types for spells. As there are not alot of cold spells early on, this would make for more ability to create cold type spells. I'll dink around with it over the next couple of days to see what can, and cannot, be done with it.

Scarab Sages

The mind boggles at the States' measurement system uriel ! I think it'll always be easier for me to figure things in metric first but one of the many things D&D has taught me is how to get used to unfamiliar measurements in spells and the like , So surprisingly 'Protection from evil 10' radius' felt much more familiar to me than 'Protection contre le mal sur 3 m' as the French version of AD&D had it...But that's just a feature of gaming using supplements in different languages .

There's a funny song about that by French band Naheulband called 'Sauvons les rolistes' (Save the roleplayers) which has funny lyrics like 'How can you recognize roleplayers ? They don't listen in English class because they already know everything ! They buy supplements whose very titles they then have to work out !" etc

I also agree that pints are probably the first and surest way for non-imperial users to come to understand imperial measurements ;)

A magician bard would be cool and complement the party (as well as have a good reason for joining the cast and crew as a 'special effects' person or actor) . Even an all-spellcasting party can probably overcome physical challenges (using Color Spray , Charm Person , Entangle , Magic Missile etc) . The rogue or monk acrobat idea is also cool though and would fit with the stage combat/stuntperson aspect as well as provide some more direct damage....So either of those ideas would be welcome :)

'Words of Power' sounds very fitting for an Irrisen Ice Mage because that's exactly how magic is said to work in the Kalevala songs but I don't know nearly enough about the release to have more to say about it.

Currently I'm thinking of.. Bard (Magician archetype), Summoner, Rogue witha magic talent or two. Of course this depends heavily on what level we're starting with.

Up page, Uriel mentioned an alchemist (sand79), cleric of Shelyn (Adrien), summoner (you) and ice mage (sorcerer, me).

Here is the current party make up, again.

Actually, the Alchemist was me. Sand79 was working on an inquisitor.

I wouldn't mind playing around with a Summoner if we got a more physical party member - instead of the monk I've got worked up. You still thinking of doing something besides a summoner?

I was trying to make my character capable of too many things at once, and stretching him a bit thin. It's a common problem I have when creating characters. In any case, I've confined him to just a couple of tricks, and he's coming along quite nicely now.

Heaven's Agent here. I believe this character is finished and ready for the game; let me know if you have any questions, and I'll see if I can't answer them.

As an aside, I still need to think of a name for my eidolon. Should anyone have any ideas, feel free to voice them.
