Shadow Dancer question

Advice

At 3rd level the Shadow Dancer can summon a shadow that can serve as his companion. The problem with this is below:

If a shadow companion is destroyed, or the shadowdancer chooses to dismiss it, the shadowdancer must attempt a DC 15 Fortitude save. If the saving throw fails, the shadowdancer gains one permanent negative level. A successful saving throw avoids this negative level. A destroyed or dismissed shadow companion cannot be replaced for 30 days.

So if your companion is destroyed, not only can you not summon a new one for 30 days, there's a reasonable chance you will lose a level. :( It's in your best interest to keep it healed.

As far as I know, the only way to heal a shadow would be an ability, spell, or item that channels negative energy. Apart from being forced to play a neutral cleric that channels negative energy before dipping into Shadow Dancer levels, what other ways can people think of to keep their shadow alive and healed?

Scrolls of inflict X wounds spells. This might require a party member with UMD though. You could also get the the party cleric to activate the scroll, assuming he is willing to cooperate.

In all this time, I never knew that inflict spells channelled negative energy. Ofcourse it makes perfect sense when you think about it.

I've never been particularly keen to rely on others to get my builds to work. A couple of Wands of Inflict Light Wounds is more efficient than scrolls and would probably be a "must have" for this build unless you can cast the spell.

This means that 5 levels of fighter or barbarian prior to entering the shadow dancer class is probably a really bad idea as you'll struggle to get a decent UMD skill to use the wands which has a 20 DC. It also means that if you have some levels of rogue, you can't dump your charisma score and need to maximise UMD in any way you can. Shadow Dancer is starting to look like it suffers from MAD problems.

I think the shadow dancer is more of what I like to call a "DM's" class, kind of like the assassin because it works better as a one use villian than a player controlled character. Inflict does not really channel in the sense that channel energy does. That is more a fluff thing. It does however produce negative energy which is all that is needed to heal an undead creature.

PS: I think the wand is a good idea, and it only takes a 20 UMD to activate a wand. All the party cleric is doing is providing healing, which I am assuming he would do for the party anyway. Now if the party had no cleric you may have to go with UMD.

I'd consider some levels as an evil cleric, or grabbing leadership and an evil cleric cohort.

If you have the Death Domain eventually you too will be healed by negative energy. So you can burst, heal your shadow and yourself and hurt your enemies (who hopefully will be taking strength damage as well).

Just a thought, great way to keep you and your little friend alive. =)

The other side of that is, if you are a fighter or barbarian, your Fort save is going to be really good so you don't have to worry about the neg level as much (except that natural 1 fail occasionally). But that is easily remedied by a restoration spell (available at 7th level, 2 levels before you can get into Shadowdancer).
