Just wondering what people think about on a different kind of point buy. What if players had a total of 70 points to spend on abilities. Each ability would be a base of 0 and points would be on a one for one cost. Put a cap of 16 or 18 on each ability. For example:
12 Strength
12 Dexterity
14 Constitution
10 Intelligence
12 Wisdom
10 Charisma
Any useful input would be appreciated.

Honestly... just stick with the point buy from the CRB. It is superbly balanced and getting a stat from 15 to 16 SHOULD cost more than 0 to 1. Leaving the door open that wide is just asking for problems, I understand it seems a little weird math wise to do the first time but trust me, it really is the best option. Be it 15 for harder games or 20 up through 25 each range has its own unique feel to it as well.

I have used a similar point buy. It kind of erases the influence that race has on ability modifiers though, which is why I dropped it.
I used 82 points for a hard campaign. I never tried anything lesser because the 2 times I used it the game was ran with the intent to make the players think they were going to die, assuming they did not die.Once I realized that the race did not matter as much with this method I switch back to the regular point buy.
I would only use the one for one if I don't want the races to matter as much. I think a a total of 72 to 76 is better to use if you do use it.
82 was too much.
76 is equal to about a 25 point buy.

But then it also makes sense to put a floor of 6 or 8 on each ability as well. In which case, you're basically recreating the 3E or Pathfinder point buy, but with cheaper costs for high attributes.
