Freehold DM, did you read the article? It will not work on the iPhone or any related Apple Product at the moment because it requires add-on hardware that those products do not support.
The key to this is a micro-USB chip you place various bodily fluids (not nessisarly precious). I would need to read the actual article in the Guardian, but it could be possible that any phone with enough processing power could also use this device.
What's the current cost of such tests now? Anywhere from 50 to 400 dollars depending the test and lack of insurance. A 1 dollar chip and a 300 dollar smartphone starts cutting costs real quick if your talking about something like a clinic or aid group. If it works it's also a bit more portable the a full lab.
Don't think about in the context of a personal health test but in the context of clinics.
