Critique my build please, NO CoT SPOILERS!

Advice

Hello there,

I am playing Wart in DM Talomyr's Council of Thieves AP.

I have found that while I REALLY enjoy playing an alchemist, I feel that there is more there that I am just not seeing.

Would you care to critique my build, and let me know if there is some glaring problem you see, or if there is something that I could do better?

I am not going to change where the character is currently, as I seriously doubt that I could anyway, but I would appreciate some advice on where I should look at going with the character in the future.

Here is the Character Sheet: Link Here

And here is an example of what I am capable of: Link Here <Warning, Potential Spoilers for those of you who have not played Council of Thieves AP!>

Some minor notes:

  • The GP listed is not exactly what I have, I have some more, I just haven't added the last loot split onto the sheet.
  • I am beginning to see that the Cold Bomb discovery is just about vital in this AP. That will be my next choice, I believe...if you have a better idea, let me know, and why.
  • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!! NO SPOILERS! I am enjoying this AP, and would like it to stay a surprise!

Also, if your comments are outright rude, troll-esque, or inflammatory, expect to be ignored. Thank you very much.

    I certainly appreciate your consideration,

    Wart

  • Your best bet is to use the search function/read through the posts about alchemists and go from there. I think Mr. Ogre (or 0gre) has a thread devoted to alchemists, regardless something is definitely out there for the class.

That being said being 3rd level means you might feel a lack of "oomph," many hybrid classes don't come into their own until mid/later levels. It is a matter of slogging through the early levels to get your chance to shine.

    Liberty's Edge

You have low strength, and you're a halfling. Most of your 'oomph' comes from bombs. You're a high-int character, and you have lots of skills. You are a support character, especially right now. At low levels, strength is very important.

Shouldn't you have 6 bombs per day? Or are you not done leveling up?

Cold bombs are great, though no use against undead. Cheliax loves fire, but it also loves undead. If you don't have the infusion discovery (can't find your current discovery), I recommend it. Especially with a big party. You, for example, can't make real good use of those True Strike or Enlarge Person extracts. Your friends can, and they'll love you for having them, once you can hand those out.

You have a high AC, and you have lots of skill points. You don't do lots of damage, at least not once you're out of bombs. There's nothing wrong with this, but it's a fact of life for a slip like you, especially one without great strength.

Make sure you focus on Disable Device, unless someone in the party is better at it than you are already. Not that CoT focuses on it more than other AP's, but that it's an extraordinarily useful skill for someone to have, and usually someone needs to have it. And the person who has it needs to have it at high levels.

Well, for starters it looks like you didn't update some of you level dependent abilities.

Your splash damage should be 5, min damage of 2d6+3 is 5, not 4
    You should have 6 bombs per day, class 3 + int 3 = 6
Your craft: alchemy competence bonus is equal to your class level not just +2, you have +2 listed both in description of Alchemy (su) and your skill
Your caster level for your extracts is 3 not 1, and cure light wounds should reflect this as well.
A 3rd lvl achemist with an INT of +3 should only have 4 1st lvl extracts per day
What was your 2nd lvl discovery? I'm not seeing it listed anywhere.
Don't forget your mutagen also provides +2 natural armor bonus

Ah... I now see that you're still using the playtest version? I never used it, so not positive what changes were made. All my comments were based on final version.

As for critique on playing, just remember your bombs are limited. Sometimes its better to save them and attack with something else, especially solo creatures where you can't splash to good use.

I agree with SkyLancer too, you're like a low level wizard right now. Your abilities are "ok" but later levels you'll notice quite an improvement.

Don't forget about your throw anything feat. Feel free to pick things up and start tossing them at enemies when you run out of bombs. You might also consider alchemical items/splash weapons as back up. I know you don't have a lot of carrying power, but having some of the others maybe carry them for you might work out for ya. Sure they might only do 1d6 (alch fire, acid, holy water, etc) but you also get your int to their damage as well. It looked like you were able to use a bunch of sources for gear, so check out the alchemical items there, you might find some goodies.

Don't know if you have time in the campaign for crafting, but I've got a spreadsheet that helps out figuring times (and has a list of every paizo alchemical item to boot) that might come in handy if you are able to craft.

See! This is why I love the Paizo boards!

Thank you Skylancer, I will engage the Search-fu to find that thread.

Lyrax, I am done leveling, I must have missed it. HOOOOREAAAHHHYYYY! MORE BOMBS!

Eric, wow! In depth, I like it! I am actually using the final version, but I thought I updated everything. Missed...a lot...apparently. I will update asap. Thanks!

Dr. Strangelob and Mr. Hyde: The Ogre's Guide to Alchemists

It is in the archives now, I never actually looked at it but remembered running across it awhile back, I was bored and went looking a little while ago. It (the thread here at Paizo) is a compilation of links that does lead off site though, in case you are one of the "super paranoid of the net" types, just a warning.

I am not, that is what anti-virus and what not is for....but as for my employer...well, that my friend is another story entirely.

Apologies all around, the discovery I took was precise bombs.

For purposes of my instruction, here are my added levels:

Level 3 Link Here, it is behind the spoiler there, go ahead...you know you want to click it

Looks like Wart will be a great "Mr. Strangelob".
