Loaba - while treantmonks guide are not essential reading they sre very helpful especially to a newbie caster - my fiance started with playing a ranger for a couple of levels then she decided she wante to play a caster so I had her read th sorceror/wizard guides to give her some ideas (I helped alot with the technical stuff since she is a completely newbie player but the guides were well written & they helped out & still do now
the guides show you ways to be more than just a cannon - you can control the battlefield which is very impressive or you can help the party with buffs like haste - both of these my partner has done in games since she started as a sorceror
wizard means making hoices every game day which can be daunting reselecting spells but you do have that option - whereas the sorceror can pick what spell to cast whenever they choose assuming they know it so initial selection is important but TM's guide really helps here
