Off-topic: In Lynn Flewelling's 'Nightrunner' series, the Aurenfaie culture's highest punishment is twai sholo, or "two bowls". You're put in prison, and every day you are given two bowls of food - one plain, one poisoned. If you choose wisely, and are very very very lucky, you might live for a long time by choosing the correct bowl to eat from. If you survive the twai sholo for a year, you are set free, because obviously the gods never intended for you to die.

Actually, he may have. His Keeperes did expected it, Paul was quite old for a octopus.
The Aquarium had him cremated and now thinks about a statue (and quietly has put a new octopus into the tank - named Paul)
