Pick a ckass when you gain this trait - your caster level in that class gains a +2 trait bonus as long as long as this bonus doesn't increase your caster level higher than your total Hit Dice.
1. Does that mean that a non-caster could have the spell ability of a spell caster, or does it mean that a multiclassed character could know and be able to cast more spells than his level as a spell caster would normally allow (and have possible other bonuses as well), or does it just mean that the spells are treated as if cast by a character of higher level? That is, could a Fighter-3 also have the abilities of a Sorcerer-2? Would a Barbarian-2/Sorcerer-2 have the spells and abilities of a Sorcerer-4? Or would his spells simply be treated as if cast by a Sorcerer-4?
2. Is the bonus "all-or-nothing"? That is, if the character had 3 total HD, 2 of which were sorcerer, would the bonus be +1 or 0?

1) If you take Magical Knack in a class you don't have, I would interpret this to mean that you do not gain the CL2. I'm basing this on classes like ranger and paladin, which have no caster level (not caster level 0) prior to 4th level. It's largely moot, as the CL without a spell list isn't very useful. In any case, without the spell casting class ability, you certainly gain no spell casting ability.
Your Fighter 3 would have no spell casting ability.
Your barb 2 / sorc 2 would have the sorcerer CL4; he would cast his spells as CL4 instead of CL2, but would not have 2nd level spells, for example.
2. Your sorc 2 / anything 1 would have CL3.

Your interpretation is reasonable and logical.
+1
Any other seems to good to be true. But +1 or +2 CL is pretty good, especially for low-level characters. Having the summoned monster hang around for an extra round or two is a great help!
I am in the process of building a barbarian/sorcerer, half-elf. When/if he gets to play, it should be fun. I think I'll take barbarian class first for the hit points.

1.
Caster Levels do not give you spells per day or class-level dependent abilities, just Caster levels, iirc the diference is explained at the beginning of the Prestige Class chapter and a few other chapters. Only class levels can give you spells per day, so higher CLs just make your spells more powerful.A non spell caster can take that feat, but is almost useless for him. Having CL2 in a sorcerer class without having any sorcerer spell to cast has few uses, if any.
A spell cast by a Barbarian-2/Sorcerer-2 with this trait would be treated as if cast by a Sorcerer-4 (note that most things depend of your Caster level, but a few things depend of your class level -usually just written as level.)
The trait is useful for Eldricht Knights, multiclass spell casters, Holy Avengers, etc.. a better CL usually means more damage, duration..
