It means the poster can’t actually think of anything to refute your argument, and isn’t clever enough to come up with an intelligent or truly cutting comeback, but wants to try to appear smart or elitist nevertheless.

I miss the old days.

What they want you to think they mean is 'your post is so stupid that the nicest thing I can say is welcome to the forums', but in reality what Mothman said is true.

Or the poster thinks your a troll and doesn't want to feed into whatever asinine straw-man that troll has come up with this time.

I always thought it was a veiled way of saying ‘you must be a noob’ or ‘you must be new here or you’d know that argument’s been done / refuted / gets short thrift’ or whatever. So, 'Hi Welcome' (aka 'I’m a douchebag').

But yours makes sense too. I don't know if there is an actual defined meaning (apart from 'I'm a douche').

Could be. I've always found that the quickest way to derail a troll is to ignore them completely.

Sort of defeats the purpose of ignoring someone if you post something that essentially means 'I'm ignoring you'.

The goal isn't to derail them. It's to troll the troll, for fun and profit.

In my experience Trolls are often know it all comic book guy from the Simpson, patronizing types. And I find nothing irritates a patronizing know it all than patronizing them back.

It's not something a Lawful good person would do. But a Chaotic Good person...

No the goal is to be a jerk nothing more. It should be flagged as breaking posting rules and ignored.

I think a tally of unique "Hi Welcome"s received would be a good indicator of how much of a jerk the community thinks you are.

It's a community service, really.

Better yet - add it to the filter and have it auto-replaced with "I'm a douche-canoe!"

That would make me chuckle.

No its not. However if you look at it as "I who said hi welcome am a total ass and a troll and should be ignored as such"

Then yeah its a look I am a jerk who can't really refute anything or add anything to the topic but be a jerk service

You chaotic types ... whatever rocks your boat I guess.

I suppose I’ve been guilty of the same type of thing myself in the past (trolling the troll), I just find that particular comment to be particularly pointless, annoying and patronising. And no, not because I’m the comic book guy type myself :-)

Maybe I'm just too old to appreciate its elegance or something, although I'd tend to say lazy rather than elegant.

What should people write when someone is being a derailing ass on a thread? I'm pretty sure "You are being a derailing ass" would also be something you want to have flagged, right?

How do you tell someone that you think they are being a troll? I mean you could say "Troll", but that would be flagged...

Solutions?

Forum rules are ‘flag it and move on’.

However, there are many posters who have refined the art of making sure that no single post of theirs, taken in isolation, really breaks the messageboard guidelines, or quite puts them into troll territory. Only when taken as a body of work do you see the pattern. Flagging one post won’t do much and flagging everything they post probably isn’t the solution. I’m quite convinced that posts like ‘Hi Welcome’ probably aren’t the solution either. Being a jerk to combat a jerk? It usually just leads to escalation.

Hehe.

Rather than this ‘ignore’ function that various people keep asking for, can we have a function where you can select various posters and everything they post just shows up for you as ‘I’m a douche-canoe’?

Well, ross said on oct 6 the "Hi Welcome" stuff needs to stop; ergo I guess it can actually be flagged...

If you get a Hi Welcome, you can know that someone thinks you are being an ass. If you agree or not, it's a good thing to know at least one person thinks you are being an ass.

Personally, I would love an ignore feature for some of the recipients of the "Hi Welcome" post. I generally find it being given to those who are deserving of welcome.

So he did. Looking through Ross’s recent posts it seems an awful lot of his time is spent having to remove posts, tell people to cool down, or tell people that just because someone posts something you disagree with, it does not make them wrong / stupid / a jerk etc.

So it looks like Hi Welcome is pretty well officially banned as Spanky said.

Most people who are being an ass know they are being an ass – they don’t need to be told. On the other hand, just because someone posts something you don’t agree with, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are being an ass.

As other people in this thread have pointed out, it's a coded way of saying 'You must be new here, there's no other way you could be this clueless.'

Which means it's pretty much universally intended as an insult. So the best thing to do if you see someone using it is to flag it and move on.

The best solution here is to avoid responding to the troll, and flag any and all posts which you feel are out of line. Since I don't have time to read every post made on the messageboards, if the 'body of work' (as you put it) is important, flag it. Or email webmaster@paizo.com with a short message describing the problem and who is causing it, if you feel that is more informative than a series of flags.

Kids these days.

Back in my day, we used to just be arrogant and condescending. Having a codeword for it sorta takes the fun out of it, doesn't it?

Please do not do this. It may be fun for you, but even if it does make the troll feel bad, they may simply feel the need to reassert dominance. Some of the worst flamewars I've seen on this forum resulted from people trying to out-troll a troll, or two trolls getting into a skirmish. When two people are both determined to get the last word, it's like playing chicken, only there's no collision at the end to make them stop.

Just flag it and move on. You'll make everyone's life easier.

I guess I would just say that if someone says something worthy of reply, its worth trying to say it with a degree of respect.

If someone deserves to be ignored, ignore them.

If they say something way out of line, flag it.

If someone says something you want to discuss with them, discuss it, don't try and win the freaking internet using some coded message.

You flag it and move on. Look at it this way, if you call someone a troll and you're wrong, then you're kind of being insulting. If you call someone a troll and you are correct, then you're still giving them attention and letting them know they have you riled up. In other words, you're giving them exactly what they want.
