Noob question, sorry if it's easy

Rules Questions

I'm curious how the metamagic feat Empower Spell works. Basically, I'm interpreting it 3 different ways and am not sure which, if any, are correct. I'll use burning hands in these examples.

1) Normally 2d4. Increase the variables by half, and it becomes 2d6
2) 2d4=3d4
3) 2d4= roll the dice, and add 50% to each roll.

I feel dumb for asking this, but I cannot find any specific clarification. It seems like it is obvious to everyone except me. Anyone want to help a new DM out?

(3) is the correct way.

Wow, that was quick. Thank you so much. The mage in the group is starting to look into these feats, and I wanted to make sure I had a grasp of how they worked. Very much appreciated.

There are no stupid questions. Only stupid answers. And Zaister is right

You're welcome! I'm always glad to help out.

your question is already answered correctly but I just wanted to agree that it's perfectly ok to ask 'noob' questions. Heck i know guys playing for 20 years that get that one wrong still. So ask away whenever you arent sure.

Liberty's Edge

Just to clarify- roll the 2d4, add them *together*, then increase that by 50%, rounding the number down.

So if you roll 1 and 1 you get 2, which then goes up to 3. 4 and 3 yields 7, which then goes up to 10.

To further clarify, I believe it's been specified/clarified for Pathfinder that you only add 50% to the dice roll and not non-dice bonuses/penalties.

So, for example, empowered magic missile with a 9th level caster (normal damage 5d4+5) is

5d4, add them together, add 50%, then +5

and not

5d4+5, add it up, then add 50%.
