Template vs. Race vs. Class

Homebrew and House Rules

Heyas guys n gals of these wonderful forums!
I am working on making a class...and I've run into an interesting problem, and could use some input.
Some of the class' abilities are more akin to racial abilities, like being able to sense things, stat bumps, etc. How would these things be best addressed?
The options are, as I see it:
1) Create a new race to depict a person modified to have certain abilities.
2) Create a template for it.
3) Go ahead and make them class abilities.

I like option 2 better...but can you give a template as a class ability? If its a EL/CR 1 template, can you grant it as part of the first level of a class? Or is that a double whammy? Usually, if I understand it correctly, +1 EL means starting as a 2nd level character, but what if it's part of the class? Should you do that?

Thoughts?

Wow...nothin? Am I bein too vague?

Probably.

There are/were paragon levels in Unearthed Arcana that were levels in a race, and some monsters broken down into racial levels, like some of the Savage Species racial progressions... Paizo did quite a few in different issues of Dragon.

However, if the question is can I give away enough abilities that qualify as a +1 template and also give a hit die, skills, base attack, and saves, my answer would be no.

Template sounds like the best option, but you could also make it part of transitional prc.

What exactly do you have in mind?

Yes. But we can try to help anyway.

From what I can gather you're making a class that changes someones race as they go up in levels, if that's right then you can go right ahead and add the class abilities. It has been done before in PrCs like Dragon Disciple so it isn't too unusual.

True... transitional prcs. There are also a few others in 3.5 material, like Elemental Savant and... that crappy golem-ish one in Complete Arcane that had something to do with swallowing starmetal. However, depending on the degree of change, a full ten level might be overkill.

What are you wanting to add Kryzbyn?

I'm trying to make a conversion of the Claymore fighter from the anime of the same name...
It doesn't have to be 100%...but the character is (in a nutshell) a "demon" hunter, who is taken in and converted into a claymore by mixing in demon blood with theirs (no where near as powerful as the half-fiend template). This gives them many abilities...
Some are best served by class levels (a ki pool like system) others by racials (like being able to sense "demons", or other claymores) but they don't exist as a race per se, because they only have these abilities by undergoing this process.
My basic question is, should I, as the first level of this class basicly grant a template to mimic the racial-type abilities as long as its not over +1?

Well, paladins get detect evil... and there are a few detect spells like detect undead, so creating a similar spell-like ability that can be used at will that detects certain types of creatures is not too far out there.

I'd almost lean toward a template and then create racial levels or a prc to build on the template... but that's just my first impression.

But I'm not familiar with Claymore, so I may be off base.

They're stronger than normal humans as well...so they need stat bumps, just nothing as major as the half-fiend template or the advanced template...

Silver Crusade

There is a class in 3.5 Minitures Handbook that gets nothing special but + to stats. I would check it out and remember that getting a plus to a stat really pigeon holes a class and doesnt provide very much depth or flavor. Also can be game breaking if not done properly.

This is exactly what I'm tryin to avoid.

I think in Forgotten Realms Faiths and Pantheons one of the Prestige classes (back of the book) gave +cha boost every now and then. It seemed to me that it was done well.
