What's a "pitch-hitter" build?

What makes a pitch-hitter build a pitch-hitter build?

I've seen the term crop up here and there, but have no idea what defines it.

You may be mixing up with 'switch-hitter'.

If so, this is a character who can use two attack modes, Treantmonk created a Ranger build that uses bow well and melees well: switching weapons in combat.

It's a reference to batsmen who can play left-handed or right-handed.

Maybe a "Switch hitter" and someone has their terms confused?

No idea. I am guessing the term you want is "pinch-hitter" and I still have no idea.

It's a build that's designed to use multiple attack options rather than specializing on just one. The most common usage seems to be builds that specialize in ranged combat as well as at least one form of melee combat (such as ranger who uses Combat Style feats to get important ranged attack feats like Precise Shot and Deadly Aim while using standard advancement feats to get melee feats like Power Attack).
