Monstrous PCs and Their Ability Scores

Rules Questions

The Exchange

So if one plays a monstrous PC that doesn't have its PC stats on its page, do you use the base ability scores listed for the monster on the stat block instead of rolling? Because I don't see how you could roll/point buy if you don't know the creature's racial modifiers.

As once told by a WoTC service rep, "Subtract 10 from each of the creatures ability scores, and round down to find it's modifiers"

I find the same more or less works for beasties in the bestiary :)

Liberty's Edge

If the monster is reasonably close to human in abilities and form (orc, hobgoblin, aquatic elf, etc) you could just assign it some stat bonuses similar to those of the humanoids in the core book. i.e. +2 to one physical stat, +2 to one mental stat, -2 to one stat. Then create the the attribute scores as normal.

This system won't work with all monsters. Is there a specific monster you'd like to know about?

I think from memory there was a post on this some time ago & an official ruling was made - at least it came from paizo staff so I assume it was official

I believe the rule to work out base stats was
even pt stat minus 10 eg str 22 - 10 = base stat of 12
odd pt stat minus 11 eg cha 15 - 11 = base stat of 4

hope this helps
