I have started off with a sword and board ranger (APG) waving a bastard sword about.
I'm not really interested in bashing but there are only two defensive feats on the combat style list.
Are there other feats somewhere I could ask my GM to swap in because they're thematically appropriate, or should I just switch to the two-handed path for those moments when I drop the shield and start swinging?

There have been complaints that the weapon style lists are too small. Definitely ask your GM to swap in some feats; I would allow a few alternatives, at least. Missile Shield, for example, should be on the list, and I can even imagine Bodyguard. Bodyguard combined with Saving Shield would make you popular with adjacent allies, at least. ^__^

If you really are set on sword and board, I have to ask... why aren't you going fighter? The extra feats are what you need to make this style go to it's potential.
Sometimes I like to match my characters to a mini i've just spent a couple of hours painting, that's the main reason for sword and board.
It's a one-player with two gestalt characters game (our way of doing an AP one-on-one) And the ranger/bard provides a pet, skill options and some spells to compliment the wizard/cleric.
I wanted all spellcasters and paladin didn't fit the campaign or the mini.
I've suggested missile shield to my GM and she'll allow it. She said I could have a couple of generic combat feats as well to compliment the style and help out the two-person party.
It got me speculating about what defensive feats (feat chain?) you might add for a shield bearer. Perhaps something to protect against flanking, or AoO? I thought a defense against cones would be good (the classic shield held up to deflect dragon's breath).
