Does the STAP contain any stats for Mathalay? If not, anything give a clue to class and approximate level?

He's a LN male human aristocrat 3/fighter 5 according to Dungeon 143 page 60. There's LOADS of good stuff in that Farshore article after the main ToD adventure. Loads!
No stats though. You could always ask in Belessa's Journal - they seem to have had plenty of dealings with him, I'm sure the DM statted him up.
It's a fantastic tale if you're looking for ideas. I also wholeheartedly recommend Jollydoc's Savage Tide Story Hour on enworld.

Thanks, Cain, but that's okay. I ended up getting it worked out.
My Savage Tride has finally got here. I am making him a aristocrat 3/Gunslinger 5. Kinda like a geat white hunter, drawn to the Isle of Dread to take on the famous critters (and then found out how dangerous they are).
That's awesome. The Trophy Hunter ranger archetype also seems ideal for that sort of thing.
Lavinia ended up being a gunslinger in my campaign, though she's mainly a rapier wielding duelist. Strangely enough, gunslinger gave her a closer build to her former 3e swashbuckler class than fighter or rogue.
