My GM told me that I could get a sneak attack with a ranged weapon if the target was unaware of me. He said that I could take a 5 foot step, attempt a stealth check (a move action) and fire. If I made the stealth check then the shot would count as a sneak attack (30' range, of course). I thought a ranged attack could be a sneak attack only if the target was denied DEX bonus to AC.
I didn't argue, especially since I was playing up and we only had 4 at the table. I did not even ask about this; the GM told me when we were starting.

Your GM is correct if your target is unaware of you. You are considered to have 100% concealment, your opponent is considered flat-footed and denied his DEX bonus to AC from your first attack.
If you are within 30ft you are entitled to a sneak attack on your first attack, after your first attack your opponent is aware of you and is no longer flat-footed, assuming this is not round 1 and you beat his Init. in which case all your attack(s) are sneak attacks.| Majuba |
You also must have some form of cover or concealment in which to use your stealth (unless you have Hide in Plain Sight).
Your GM is being a bit generous, as the "Sniping" rules under the Stealth skill impose a -20 penalty for a similar maneuver (firing once from stealth, and re-stealthing immediately).
I have allowed it myself though, as "sniping" is mostly to prevent even your location from being known, whereas with the stealthing in combat your GM is allowing the opponents know where you are, just can't anticipate your attacks.
