A Rise with a Difference

Hi all,

I've been involved in Dreamscarred Press's work on updating 3.5 psionics to Pathfinder standard, and their work has come on very nicely, to the state where I'm looking to help with some play-testing.

I'd like to run a PbP game of Rise of the Runelords (as it's an AP I have and it's a good standard to run against) for a party that includes (but does not have to consist exclusively of) psionic characters using the beta-releases from Dreamscarred's site. Currently they have everything in beta to my satisfaction except the soulknife, for which a beta-2 is expected shortly.

More information will follow, including a little history on where such psionics could fit in the Golarian cosmology, but who's interested?

Kelvin

Don't have the bandwidth to play, but you can be sure I'm following along.

Can't wait to see how the psi's perform.

Me! Me! Me!

Is the Beta a free download?

I'm interested, not sure I'll go with a psionic but I'd love to get into a Rise of the Runelords pbp.
Couple questions:
Will this be on the Paizo boards?
Knowledge of the AP ok?
Post per day Requirement?

Thanks,
Evan

The beta release material is free but a bit piecemeal, you need to use the 3.5 psionics rules to 'fill in the gaps' a little.

Psionic Powers Overview
Psionic Powers
Psionic Skills
Psionic Focus
Psionic Races
Psionic Feats

The Psion Base Class

The Psychic Warrior Class

The Wilder Class

Edit: Evan, to answer your questions ...
Will this be on the Paizo boards? Yes.
Knowledge of the AP ok? It's an old AP, so I expect at least some players will already know it, so yes.
Post per day Requirement? If players can manage at least one post every other day, that would be great. My life is about to get very busy from October, and I won't hold anyone to something I cannot keep up with myself.

Yes, it is. Follow Dabbler's link to Dreamscarred and go to the Beta-compilation thread.

Cool! I got to answer a question for you for once.

EDIT: Beat to it by Dabbler. :-(

As a big fan of psionics, I'd like to throw my hat into the ring for this. I've been in two previous RotRL PbP's, but both died just as the PCs were reaching...

Spoiler:
the Glassworks
.

Thanks!

Have always been interested in the psychic warrior, so i will throw my hat in to the ring. Will take out my old pscionic books and look through the updates and get a concept going. I miss pscionics.

If no one else wants to play a Wilder, I will happily.

Wow, and I thought support would be hard to find! I'll get my documents together and post links to them here either later today or tomorrow. Races-wise there will be a Castroval-influenced psionic version of elf available, and given the nature of RotR, I rather hope no-one sets their hearts on playing a blue :D. I'll put in rationales for the available psionic races in Golarian, but if people have particular ideas I am all ears.

Changing my mind to a pscion. Straight caster. Played too many warriors lately. Thinking telepathy, but we will see. Zeph or elf, though zeph seems fun. Thinking of a charismatic smart character, with a little bit of dex thrown in.

I'll hold off on my character idea until I see what the rationales for psionic races are, but it'll may be a half-elf (given writings in the campaign book, and their sense of "between"), or a half-orc... We'll see.

Thanks (and thanks therealthom)!

BTW, what is the deal with zipped-up PDFs? It saves no space at all, and it means I have to download it instead of reading it within my browser. :-/

I'll probably go with a psychic warrior (half-giant?) or psion, depending.

The Exchange

Saw your post on the DSP website, and I am definitely throwing my hat in the ring for this one. Hmmm, I'm probably going to go a more martial bent, not sure if it'll be psy warrior, soulknife, or some sort of wilder though...

Great to see you Alan!

Now, for those wanting to see how I envisage psionics existing in Golarian (especially with Paizo looking at an alternative for regions such as Vudra) there is a document you can download here. Apologies that I couldn't do this directly, but mediafire which I normally use appears to be down right now :(

I will add, if people have other ideas how some races could fit in or how psionics could originate, I'm all ears - nothing is set in stone, especially if it gets in the way of a cool character background.

Probably won't play a Psionic character personally, but I wouldn't mind throwing my hat in for a rogue. Alignment restrictions? I'd prefer not (for flexibility of concept rather than for screwing over the rest of the party; I can behave), but I can live with them ;).

I would prefer a non-evil party, but if you can create an evil character that can work with the party I am not absolutely opposed to this. I do not want an all-evil party, though.

Cool. Also, is APG available, or is it Core/Psionics only?

APG is available, build is 25 point-buy. I'll roll it up into one post once we go to a discussion thread in the next day or two.

I'm Interested, But I have never played a psionic character before, would this be a problem? Diffidently would like to try it out!

after looking at the classes, I think I will be a psy warrior.

OK, so we have:

Hogarth
Evan Whitefield
Max Hellspont
Mundin Ironhand
Me'mori
AlanM
Chris Parker
Jhord

I think that's plenty of players for now, I was looking for about six or so. Mediafire is working so here is the source document. I'll start the discussion thread proper soon. Thank you guys!

Are we going to be split up any? Two groups perhaps?

Me'mori wrote:

No, just one group will be more than enough, and anyway I have noticed that the boards have a drop-out rate in PbP games. If I have to make choices to cut the party numbers, it'll be in terms of order of posting here, which I think is the fairest way of doing it. That said, I am fairly confident that if I start at eight players, I'll probably have six by the end of the first module. If the party does split up naturally at times, that's OK (as opposed to potentially suicidal). I can always make up for the numbers of the party with greater numbers of protagonists.

Ah, I understand. Given the starting amount that you have though, I'll be the first to back out then. Coordinating that many people can be difficult, and I'd rather not be a contributor to that level of difficulty.

Until next time.

I appreciate the gesture, if you watch this space I'll give you first dibs if anyone else drops out!

Player with possible Class and race
Hogarth, psychic warrior (half-giant?) or psion
Evan Whitefield, Ranger or Druid (human)
Max Hellspont, ?
Mundin Ironhand, pscion (Zeph or elf)
AlanM, psy warrior, soulknife, or some sort of wilder
Chris Parker, rogue
Jlord, psy warrior

Sharatok...tshamek.
Vohnkar Viskali of the Shriikirri-Quah greets you.

This is a character I almost started a RotR pbp with. I'll convert him to pathfinder and 1st level as soon as I can. Probably either do Ranger or Druid possibly multiclassing between the two.

Right now I'm leaning toward playing a Varisian wilder or psion (seer, kineticist, or generalist). Decisions, decisions...

I went back and forth a lot but settled on telepathy discipline for my psion. Have powers selected, and will stat things out.

Dabbler, I'm thinking of a half-giant who works with his father Gorvi at the Junker's Edge. He likely gets his unusual size from his mother Maisy's side of the family. She ran off when he was just a baby to live with her kinfolk, the Kreegs.

Is that too far out, or does it sound okay?

Well, I've got a character built; a former gang member from Riddleport who's recently moved to Sandport in an attempt to leave his life of crime behind him. He's Neutral Evil, and likely to be the perpetrator of evil deeds early on, but he's trying very hard to become a better person. He even worships Sarenrae (she is the goddess of redemption after all). His reason for helping the party? He rather likes Sandport, and would prefer it if whatever is threatening it stopped. I plan for his alignment to have changed to at least Neutral by the end of the AP; perhaps even Neutral Good if the opportunity presents itself.

Does that work, Dabbler?

Here are the stats I will hopefully have the background done tonight sometime. Long story short the tribe found out about his strange powers and he was exiled and thus became an adventurer, making his way to Sandport.

--jlord

Evan, That looks reasonable. No-one else has gone for a divine caster, so a druid may be in demand.
Hogarth, that sounds very much OK.
Chris, your idea gets my stamp of approval, I like characters with skeletons in their closets.
Jlord, remember that as an elan, Thanadros will not remember much, if anything, of his life before becoming an elan. This could prove interesting if he runs into anyone from his past.

I'm working on an expanded traits document to add in, but everyone can have two traits apiece. There will be some specialist psionic ones to come!

Edit: There is a beta-2 psychic warrior now released.

I've started a thread in the a thread in the discussion board so we can continue the character development there.

Consider me watching this thread Dabbler and this as my hand-raise as an alternate should there be openings in the campaign.

I'll dig around some more in the Beta-DSP files and at least give a character concept some thought. I'll hold off on writing anything up unless/until you have an opening.

Yasha, Me'mori, we have had Evan drop out due to internet restrictions. If either of you fancies playing a divine caster, or if any other players out there feel up to the challenge, please post here!

Well...just to be fair, since Me'Mori did chime in well before I did, I'd give them the position first, should they want it, were I you.

However, if you've not heard from Me'Mori in a day or two, I'd be more than willing to brainstorm up an idea and get it squared away for a divine caster.

That would be great, Yasha! We'll give Me'mori a few days for first refusal.

I'll pass to Yasha. By my count, the group consists of seven people. Still too large for my tastes.

I know it's big, but they do need some kind of divine caster - looks like you are on Yasha. If you can post your character in the discussion thread that would be cool. Currently a cathedral is about to be consecrated to Desna, but it serves Abadar, Sarenrae, Shelyn, Erastil and Gozreh as well, so plenty of possibilities for a cleric to slot in smoothly. Otherwise there are many visitors present from surrounding lands, making the appearance of just about any class you fancy not unlikely.

Just to make sure I have things straight...

-25 point buy
-traits: looks like 2.
-how is starting gold determined? rolled?

Let me know.

Here is the character Dabbler, for you approval. I posted in the Discussion thread as well.

Once again, I must send out the call ... yasha has dropped out and there is room for a healer-type in this game. Any takers?

25 point buy, 1 trait to start, average cash. Party are still at first level.

How big of a hurry are you in?

I could update Vaclav here to PF. Or if you have a psi-based healer class, I could give it a try.

I could do character gen while at my parents and post the PC Monday.

Feel free to punt me if someone faster comes along.

Vaclav looks OK, thom, and there is no 'psionic healer' available at the moment - besides, it's good to have a 'normal' caster as a 'control' if you take my meaning. Party have no real loot as of yet, I don't know how familiar you are with RotR but they have just completed the first goblin encounters. If you update him to the format I've outlined, he should be good to go. I'm happy to wait for him, things will go slow over the weekend anyway.

Shoot. I forgot to warn you that I'm playing in Wellard's RotRL. I should have no problem keeping things separate, but understand if you'd rather take someone else.

In any eent I'll get to work on Vaclav.

That's not a problem, I shall trust your integrity!

I'm just sad we'er not seeing a soulblade in this crew (Im somewhat of a fan of the class). Or was that a class you asked nobody roll?

At the time I started this game, the only soulknife available was the beta which was horribly broken. The beta_take2 was much better, but still had some major work to be done on it.

I agree, I really like the class too, but it can always come in later if we get openings.
