Pathfinder Essentials?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I am new to Pathfinder and I am trying to figure out what books would be essential to buy if I am looking to be the DM for my group.

I currently have
* Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook
* Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Bestiary
* Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: GameMastery Guide

I am looking to create my own world so I am not really interested in the Golarion material but am interested in new classes, feats, monsters etc.

The Core Rules and Bestiary are all you really need. The new Advanced Players Guide has 6 new classes and class variants for all of the core classes. It also has a lot of new feats and spells, so would probably be worthwhile for you to purchase. As with the rest of the straight RPG line, they have tried to make most everything setting neutral in the APG. Of course, there is a little bit of Golarion in there (mainly the deities for the clerics and religion traits), but it is easy to swap out for homebrew stuff.

More monsters will be coming out in the Bestiary 2 later this year.

Good luck with your game.

Thanks that is what I was thinking just need someone to confirm my thoughts

You have everything you "need" with the Core Rulebook and the Bestiary. The Advanced Player's Guide is optional but a good buy if you have players who are a little bored with the standard character types and want to try something a little different. The Game Mastery Guide is essential if you are a newer DM in need of advice, but if you've played a lot of games before, you probably can get by without it.

If you are designing your own campaign, then you're good to go. If you are runnng an Adventure Path or stand-alone module, you may want to buy the campaign setting materials relevant to that part of Golarion.

I also recommend the Critical Hit and Critical Miss decks just for the sheer descriptive fun of it. But I'm an evil GM.

Yeah, the Advanced Players Guide is the next book you want.

Core Book = Players Handbook
Gamemastery Guide = DMG & DMG II
Bestiary = Monster Manual
Advanced Players Guide = Players Handbook II

As far as the Complete series -- it seems as though Paizo is mixing those with Golarion specific books. The Guide to Absalom and Seekers of Secrets, for example, have Golarion specific info and a couple PrCs, Feats, Traits and crunch stuff.

Or, they've not come that far yet. Ultimate Magic and Ultimate Combat sounds to me like parts of a "Complete" series :)

Yeah, I think you're pretty much set right now. The Core Rulebook and the Bestiary are all you really need at a minimum.

The Gamemastery Guide is definately nice to have, and the Advanced Player's Guide is full of nice, new, well-balanced crunch, but neither are necessary to play a good solid campaign.

But they sure are nice! :)

The Adventurer's Armory is loaded with interesting things that are not campaign specific. I'd load it into your pile as a useful supplement.

In this case, I absolutely suggest the APG. All the new classes, Cavalier orders, Class features, and racial features will help you to create races and cultures.

You can also use websites like The Archives of Nethys and others to access the non-Golarion specific traits, feats, gear, etc from various Golarion sourcebooks without having to spend a bunch of money for maybe a page or two of useful stuff.

Or even d20pfsrd.com!

Liberty's Edge

Sounds like you're set!

So, since you have everything you need, you can buy me some cool Paizo stuff.
