Male Human Witch 4

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19

Balam, seeing the naga rise from the dead, run screaming from the temple, his mind having snapped at the horror of it all!!!!!

Player is moving on, best wishes to him, but his PC is likely to get 'et :)

We going to replace him? We may be in trouble with only bard, rogue, witch, ranger

Just bumped recruitment thread, will try to have a new player in a couple days. Anyone know someone form another PbP you think would fit in well?

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16 init
Vykral leaps backward out of range of the creature.

Sugit Init 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Mahuman Init 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

So Dram, Crisk, Vykral, Sugit, Mahuman. We'll slot Ash in when he gets a chance to check in, for now lets say the sight of seeing a creature return to undeath has temporarily frozen his mind with terror :)

Map at start of round

5 ft step to the left, and pull out a dagger as part of the move action, toss the dagger at Sugit, 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15 vs ac, 1d4 + 2d6 ⇒ (4) + (6, 3) = 13 damage, the 2d6 is if it is sneak attackable since it has not acted yet

Male Human Witch 4

Crisk yells "I hope your bad week continues Sugit!"

using Misfortune Sugit must make a dc16 will save or suffer misfortune rolling twice on all rolls and taking the lower result.

And I will move back towards the group a 5 ft step south.

As he moves into position, Dram's dagger hits the revenant with a solid "thunk", but the wound draws no blood from the pulseless creature. Crisk's curse fizzles as he falls back (Charm/Morale effect, yeah? Undead= Immune. DM= Neener neener :)). Vykral dodges the first thrashing of the creatures limbs and moves back, but is followed by the serpentine form. Sugit-that-was raises it's fists, now scaly, and attacks the halfling.

Attack 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25 THREAT!!!
Confirmation 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

Damage 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
If confirms +1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Vykral please make a Fort save....

Map at mid turn

Male Human Witch 4

@DM Ender

Spoiler:
yeah had to take one for the story on that one, wasn't sure if my character knew enough about undead other then what they are in common terms, since I grew up on the streets had to assume it was all 3rd hand, I knew what a revenant was but not really how to fight one kind of thing... So fell back on old reliable misfortune... I'm good at yelling curses at people... Crisk won't make that mistake again :p

Spoiler:
Of all the yous I know, you're my favorite you :)

Male Human Ranger 4

Initiative1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18

As Raj scampers off the the shadows, Ash draws his sword, and surges into place next to the little halfling. With all his strength he brings his sword down over his head, putting all of his strength into his blow.

Power attack1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 8 - 2 = 7
damge 1d10 + 4 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 6 = 13

edit: crap. I hope you're not using the crit fumble deck.

Ashwatthama wrote:

Ha, nope :) But you do miss, oddly enough, so Vyk still gets schwacked :( Which side of Vyk are you on?

Mahuman turns and yells for warriors...

Next round- Dram, Crisk, Ash, Vykral, Sugit, Mahuman

does not confirm. 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16 fort.

Vykral moves behind ash to get out of the creature's reach and begins to tell a story about a bad date with a halfling that had hands like ice.

inspire courage, +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls

Vykral wrote:

16 fort.

You feel like something just tugged at your very life force, like his attack hit both your physical being and your spiritual one. Otherwise, you're fine. Well, besides the HP damage.

do i get benefit from the song, or was that done in the second round?

Appears to be 2nd round- Vyk fell back in 1st with no other actions

Moving to N square of Sugit using a slightly circular route coming in from the north and pulling out shortswords while moving, attack with a single short sword 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 2 = 25 vs ac, 1d6 + 1 + 2d6 ⇒ (4) + 1 + (1, 4) = 10

Dram stalks up behind the foul creature and slams his shortsword home.

Male Human Witch 4

Moving to behind Ash (away from the creature)

Crisk begins to mumble to himself and lays his hands on Ash giving him guidance.

+1 competence bonus to next attack roll he wants to use it on, he must declare the use of it prior to using it... lasts 1 minute, would stack with inspire courage as it's morale. well would stack if he waits to next round to use since he goes before Vyk :D

Male Human Ranger 4

Having moved up on Vik's right, Ash now steps left to catch the undead monstrosity between himself and Dram. Again, the young man swings his sword in a powerful arc, this time horizontally, hoping to end the fight as quickly as possible.

Power attack 1d20 + 8 - 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 8 - 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 28
(-2 for power attack, +1 from Vyk, +1 from Crisk, +2 from flank w/ Dram)
Damage 1d10 + 4 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 6 = 14

I read it that Vyk's singing was her first round action, no? If not, adjust my atttack down -1.

As Dram and Ash's attacks rain down, the creature whips it's fists around, trying to connect with Ash.

Attack 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Damage 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Please make a Fort save if that hits you.

Both bladesmen feel an odd resistance as their weapons slash at the monster, and the wounds they leave behind seem less deep, the damage less severe, than when fighting other creatures. If either Dram, Crisk, or Ash wants to make a Know-arcane, OR just a general INT check, you are welcome to.

Vykral moves closer to the door, and maintains her performance. As she does, sunlight glints off of her armor studs, and alights on the Revenant. The reaction is immediate- Black smoke boils off the creatures skin where ever the sunlight fell heaviest, leaving wicked scorch marks across the pale flesh, and drawing an agonized shriek from the creature. Xyro, she did not actually take any actions, so let me know if you want to do anything else. I just wanted to keep the narrative moving :)

Mahumans cries for more warriors rouse the sleepy village, and several begin to assemble weapons and armor.

Map, I think

Int check 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 I cannot see the map for some reason

Take 2
Map

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9 vs ac, 1d6 + 1 + 2d6 ⇒ (2) + 1 + (5, 5) = 13
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12 vs ac, 1d6 + 1 + 2d6 ⇒ (3) + 1 + (4, 6) = 14

Dram attempts to stab into the undead thing. "Why won't you die again."

Male Human Witch 4

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23int check

Crisk mumbles under his breathe and lays his hands on Ash again giving him Guidance. +1 to next attack

Dram Rao wrote:

Prolly cuz you can't seem to hit him :)

@ Crisk

Spoiler:
You recall hearing that some Revenants can only be harmed by silvered weapons, or holy magic....

looks around for any polished object that could be used to redirect the sunlight at the beast. keeps the performance going

Vykral sees a number of mirrors on the walls of the temple. Getting one down may be difficult, as they are hung for "full sized" creatures. STR check?

Male Human Ranger 4

Ash yells, "Somebody get a torch!" as he keeps up the attack, pressing hard with all his strength.

Power attack 1d20 + 8 - 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 8 - 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 26
(-2 for power attack, +1 from Vyk, +1 from Crisk, +2 from flank w/ Dram)
Damage1d10 + 4 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 4 + 6 = 19

1d20 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4 str check. +1 for performance?

@ Ash

Spoiler:
Did you miss me asking for a Fort save? No biggie, 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22. Looks like you are fine, but you feel a strange tugging at your spirit, as though the creature had not just struck your body, but also your soul...

Ash's Attack finally seems to drop the creature, it's slithery form falling immobile on the teak wood floor.

@ Vykral- You manage to knock the mirror off the wall, but it shatters into jagged shards. On the way down you notice something odd.

Spoiler:
The Revenant cast no reflection in the mirror. You could see Asha nd Dram on either side of it, but the creature may as well have not existed...

Male Human Ranger 4

Huh. I didn't roll the save because, for some reason, I thought he missed.

Ash watches with some surprise as the perverted form of what was once a proud Naga warrior drops to the ground. After a moment's pause, he prods the (still?) lifeless corpse with his sword, and then remarks, "We should probably burn the body, just to be safe."

Ashwatthama wrote:

No biggie, you made it anyway, but yeah, he DID connect with the physical attack.

"We should chop off its head and pull it into the sun, and then burn it. I'm just saying you can never be too careful with pscyhos."

As the party discusses what to do with the remains, the guards summoned by Mahuman arrive, along with a seemingly out-of-place human. He look like an ascetic, but carries himself like a warrior.

Daiwik, please describe and introduce yourself. Your spiritual knowledge may be handy here.....

Male Male Cleric 3 / Monk1

Holding my hands in front of my face in a traditional ceremonial greeting I say, "It is the grace of The Unbeheld that has lead me to this moment. I am Daiwik Acharya, Parsi in the Temple of Veiled Visage. At once, your equal and your servant."

Knowledge Religion if you are interested DC 10:
Traditionally, Parsi of the Unbeheld is a title given to the spiritual leaders of the order; yet, they are more ascetics than adventurers. Also, Parsi cultivate a topknot of hair from birth and the length of that braid is seen as a sign of wisdom and status in the church. The man before you has a clean shaven head.

As I move toward the corpse of the revenant, my muscles tense and a furrow knits in my brow. Having been taller than most in the monastery, I walk with confidence in a smooth, upright gait (6'2" tall) and my lean frame (201 lbs) speaks to a life of healthy living as much as the lack of tan to my skin suggests a more sheltered upbringing.

I kneel next to the corpse in clothes that looked once to be of fine workmanship that have since been deconstructed both by force and their colors faded by exposure to sunlight and the elements. "Tell me of this man," I say as I crouch down and my blue eyes scan the body.

Heal Check to Determine any violence to the body prior to it's animation that may give a clue to why it rose again = 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26

As I listen to an account of the Naga's demise and the circumstances under which he was found, I recall tales of creatures that may fit the description of what the witnesses describe. "No reflection..." I mutter to myself as I ponder the nature of this terrible resurrection.

Knowledge Religion to see what I can recall about this creature = 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

Mahuman tells Daiwik the same information about Sugit, but includes his rise to unlife. Vykral explains about the reflected sunlight and lack of reflection, Crisk about the ineffectiveness of his curses, and Dram and Ash about Sugit's ability to shrug off damage. After considering this for a moment...

Daiwik is unable to discern between the new and old wounds, but...

Spoiler:
You are familiar with Wights, who have many of these attributes (intelligent, energy drain, spawn) and Vampires (sunlight vulnerability, DR/Silver, no reflection) but this appears to be some hybrid of the two. It is not a "normal" undead.

Male Male Cleric 3 / Monk1

I say a prayer that sounds like a deep, tonal chant over the body for a few moments then stand. Turning after praying over the body, I say to the assemblage, "This creature is no longer Sugit but something else entirely in it's unlife. It is like no other that I have read or heard about. It has the light weaknesses of the Baital (the half man and half bat) or maybe the Masani - called 'vampire' in the common tongue; yet, there is something more... You described that, in addition to the pain of it's blows, you felt a pull at your consciousness... your very soul. The touch of the Masani does not unseat the soul from the very flesh of the living. That property is found with corpses that have part of their decayed soul still in residence after death... they are commonly called 'whihts' or 'wights' in common. This is something new. Not completely wight... not completely vampire but but a hybrid of both... may The Everpresent be with us if something is creating more of these things for the would be a plague upon the living if allowed to grow in number."

I take a shard of the mirror that Vykral broke and step into a sunbeam to guide a shaft of light on to the body saying, "If the animus that raised Sugit's body is truly gone, it will not burn when the sun's rays strike it and Sugit should be able to be laid to rest without further need to defile his body.

I figured I would see if it still burns with the touch of the sun versus sticking a sword into it since it might have DR... just in case it is not truly dead or has the ability to regenerate like a vampire does.

Knowledge Religion to wrack my brain about common vampire and wight vulnerabilities and ways to protect against both vampires and wights. Not sure if you do it one roll for all but in my home game, I usually do it per topic desired (defenses, vulnerabilities, powers, etc.) so I will give it multiple rolls. If not, let me know and I will post a single roll in another reply:

Knowledge Religion = 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26: Vampire Vulnerabilities (ex. DR/???, fire, etc.)
Knoweldge Religion = 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18: Wight Vulnerabilities (same as above)
Knoweldge Religion = 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24: Vampire Protection (ex. things that ward off vampires)
Knoweldge Religion = 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17: Wight Protection (same as above)

Male Human Witch 4

"I don't like our chances if we come up against even a few of these..." "We are noticeably lacking on silver weapons, and the majority of my spells will have little to no affect..." "Our mission was to scout and report... we should involve the army to clear these out... If you wish the aid Mahuman"

Daiwik Acharya wrote:

The sunlight dances over the corpse, but there is no other apparent reaction.

You know most of the common stuff- Vamps are repelled by holy symbols and mirrors, can't stand garlic, are vulnerable to running water, are destroyed by sun light, have to be decapitated or burned, etc. But these are not full Vampires, perhaps more closely akin to the spawn created when a vampire feeds from, but does not kill, a mortal. They are not as strong or fast, but share many of the same vulnerabilities. They also retain the knowledge from their former life, and Spawn cannot make new vampires

Wights you know less well. They are usually created when murderers or other depraved people are laid to rest in unhallowed ground. They are intelligent, but do not remember their former lives. They drain life energy when they attack, but are especially vulnerable to resurrection magic, which destroys them instantly. A creature slain by a wight becomes a wight shortly there after. But much sooner than Sugit had changed.

The creature before you, however, is both and neither of these.

Crisk Rao wrote:

Mahuman, still reeling frpm the horror of Sugit's reanimation, shakes his head affirmatively. "Yes, yes, we need the help. I had no idea what we faced. You must find out where they are coming from."

Male Male Cleric 3 / Monk1

"Have faith Crisk, The Unbeheld equips us with weapons against the living dead though they need not be silvered. They might not be influenced like the living, they can be fought."

I relay the common vulnerabilities that I have recalled in addition to the fact that the creature before us is not a pure specimine of either creature so we would be wise to try multiple things (ex. mirrors, garlic, .

"I would accompany any who would seek to rid the world of abominations like these. They are an affront to grace of the Everpresent and must not be allowed to propogate as they can reproduce themselves into a plague on the land."

"Mahuman, if you would accept my counsel, I would instruct you to have your people to use caution when outside of the community. Hunt by daylight and in groups for the lone hunter, no matter how great his skill, can easily fall prey to unholy beasts like this. Tell me, do you have a holy man who is strong enough in his faith to shephard your people should more like these attack? I would also ask where Sugit's body was found as that would be the most likely place to start looking for the source of these creatures."

"All we know of them is this: They come every few weeks, and raid the gems we are preparing for shipment. Pacha Bosh demands a certain number of amethysts every month, the rest we trade up and down the coast. They come only at night, by long boats with muffled oars. Between raids we find no evidence of their presence, so we have no idea how they know to strike our shipments."

Mahuman looks around nervously as the summoned guards crane their ears to hear. "Sugit was slain near one of the amethyst pits. I can have someone lead you there if you wish, but it will tell you nothing."

"I say we mark all of the relevant bits down on the map and make our report, a bigger force will surely destory the undead prescence easier than a small force."

Re dotting

Male Human Ranger 4

As Ash listens, he bends over the corpse, and Raj scrambles over and climbs on to his back. Standing, he takes the monkeyin his arms, and pets his head. Listening to the others, he nods attentively, but adds, "Dram is right, I'm afraid, Manhuman. We are equipped to handle such a task, nor do we have time. An army marches behind us, and we need to provide for their needs first. We can send word to our commander, and perhaps they can help you, or free us to do so."

Male Male Cleric 3 / Monk1

I am poor at hiding my agitation and confusion, I stand mouth agape for a moment, then I close my eyes to collect mysel with a deep breath. "Am I to understand that you would leave these people to the mercy of these monsters? Surely, this is some trick of language that I am too simple to understand. Does not the great Veiled Mother Xandria teach us in the Treatices on Courage, that the mettle of a man is not tested at a time of their choosing? True, we may not have silver weapons as Crisk mentions but this one died without them. Are we to abandon these people to their fate?"
