One of my players is a half-ogre druid and they just levelled up and gained wild shape. Now wild shape is assumed to be for small or medium druids, so they can transform into small or medium animals (HD up to the druid's level). Now as a Large creature, would this druid start wild shape being able to transform into medium or large animals, but limited by his current druid level (5th). There seem to be enough medium or large animals with 5 HD or less to give him some variety.
I vaguely recall reading something about Large druids and wild shape, but I can't seem to find said information in any of the 3.5 books I have nor on any of the messageboards. If anyone know what I'm talking about and can point to a source...
Thanks,
BM

There is a chart for polymorph affects that tells you what to do when going from one size to another size.
I found it. click me| BlueMonkey |
I'm pretty sure wild shape works the same way regardless of your starting size. Small-sized druids (like Halflings) don't get "smaller wild shape", so Large-sized druids shouldn't get "larger wild shape".
"Races of the Wild" has racial substitution levels for a halfling druid which give 'undersized wild shape'. This reduces the halfling druid's wild shape sizes by 1. So the halfling druid to Small or Tiny animals at 5th level, Tiny-Medium at 8th, Diminutive-Medium at 11th, and Diminutive-Large at 15th.
I thought I had read something similar for large creatures. I can apply the same idead, 'oversized wild shape' for this half-ogre druid and just increase all of his wild shapes by one size category, but I thought I'd read something 'official' somewhere. Maybe it was in Dragon (or Dungeon) magazine. Or maybe not.
Anyway, thanks!

I took a look through the MM. There are not only enough to give him some variety, there is actually a large amount of creatures he would be able to wildshape into several levels earlier than a normal Druid.
The balancing factor for the "undersized wildshape" option seems to be that there are really fairly few tiny and smaller animals compared to the larger sizes. For the "oversized wildshape" option, you get Large animals up to 3 levels earlier, and Huge animals up to 7 levels earlier.
For instance, you get several Dire animals at level 5 (instead of 8th), as well as Dinosaurs such as the Deinonychus at 5th (instead of 8th), and the Megaraptor at 8th (instead of 15th).
Of course, you lose the ability to become a Tiny animal (like Cat, Hawk, Monkey, Rat) at any point, and Small animals (like Dog and Eagle) not until 11th. I'm not sure if that's a balanced trade.
I advise you to look over the options in detail before making this trade available :)

It is my understanding of druids that the wild shape is limited to charecter size in the fact that the druid can only change ito things one category less or greater.
So a meduim druid can change into small, med or large while a small druid can go tiny, small and medium.
In your case the large druid can go medium, large(his normal size) or huge. Again HD is A determining factor so are alot of other things such as level. In the upper levels you get large shape and tiny size as class features I think, don't quote me on that one.
If you look in races of stone thye have some large size options for druid you may find helpfull.
