Are there guidelines anywhere in any of the books that suggest a base line price for hiring an assassin? My players are heading towards the city of Katapesh and one of my players wants to hire an assassin that they find morally repulsive.
Assassins charge a base price of 1,000 gp per assassination attempt. An additional amount is charged according to the target's power and prominence (HD of the mark X 300 gp), though certain important people in Pedestal have paid far more than that amount to put their names on a safe list (DC 20).
Pulled from the sinister spire adventure WOTC adventure. It's a good rule of thumb IMO.

While applying that rule of thumb, remember that your average assassin is in far far far more danger killing a level 1 king than a level 10 shoemaker.
Well, you figure a lvl 1 king is still going to have a bunch of HD surrounding him, making the mark more expensive. :)
Further, the level 10 shoemaker will be deadly with shoes. You need to watch out for him. (I SOOOOO now need to make a lethal shoemaker for my PCs to encounter.) It's along the same lines as my Huge Squirrel monster the wizards academy set loose. :)
