I'd probably be more involved in these boards if I had better control over which threads I consider 'read. It would make it easier to find threads that catch my eye and also let me keep up with the conversation without having to scroll through threads to find the last one I read (the X new option next to a thread I read is inconsistent).

How is it inconsistent? I've pretty much always been very happy with it...
...Though it does only bother telling you there are new posts when you've actually been in the thread in question.

I've been a thread and the next time I come in I see the X New link. The 3rd time I come back there is no link for the new threads (and there have been some since I last visited the thread).

I think you may be confusing "forums," "threads," and "posts" here.
When you're viewing a specific forum, threads you have visited will tell you how many new posts there have been since you've been in that *thread*, not just on that forum. Threads you haven't been in never have any such indication.
I think you might want to try using the "focus" button, which shows you just new threads and threads with new posts since you've been in a particular forum.

There's a "focus" button?
On the main page for each forum (for example, here's the Website Feedback main page), near the search box is the Focus link. Basically it filters out any thread that doesn't have a dot or an (x new). It's also supposed to show you brand new threads but that's been a bit problematic.

~grumbles~ Trolls taste TERRIBLE!!! Trust me on that one!
You have heartburn for YEARS after eating one. Totally NOT worth it.

Gary can you change the css file, class="messageboardListingNoNewPosts", to something other than light-blue, please. My old eyes are starting to miss what has been read and what hasn't.

Well you could always use the "Stylish" plugin for Firefox and Chrome and setup your own custom style for the pages

Check my recent posts, then avoid those threads. It's simple enough that even somone with animal intelligence (such as yourself) should be able to do it, you tin-encrusted snake-beast.

Installed it, but adding to it is beyond my understanding. Could you tell me what I need to add, to just change the class to be red text?
