It might lead to some electoral system changes, which wouldn't be such a bad thing... But regardless, they'll either find a way to potter on regardless or a new election will need to be called in a few months. A hung parliament isn't necessarily such a bad thing though, NZ hasn't had a single party with a majority for over a decade!

Minority governments and hung parliaments aren't much to get worked up about, if my count is right, the current Swedish government-coalition (may it get severely trounced on September 19) is only the fourth one to have a simple majority since 1945, and we're hardly known as an unstable country, right?

My advice to our Aussie friends: fire up the barbie, have a cold canned one (any more national stereotypes I missed that would fit there?), and watch hilarity ensue as your politicoes scrambles to decide what to do.

Or, from an American perspective, we only have 2 parties, one of which is always in a majority, and our legislature still can never get anything accomplished. ;)

It is kind of crazed though - Seems like every Westminster Style Democracy is going into minority governments.

Actually, ours has a majority. Granted it's a coalition, but it does command a majority of the votes in Parliament. At least for the next few weeks.
