Environmental Hazards on Smuggler's Shiv

Serpent's Skull

Liberty's Edge

I plan to start running this on Saturday and wanted to pull together all the various bits of information on hazards into one reference page. So here is my attempt at it. Hopefully I'm not violating any rules by posting it for others to use, but if so, let me know and I'll take it down.

Some of the information comes from the core rules and AP, other stuff I added in.

I hope someone else finds this useful!

Very cool! I'm sure many GMs will find this useful. I already concocted something almost identical, though mine is <<gasp!>> handwritten. ;-)

Thanks for sharing, that's handy. Good job.

I do notice one thing though. Isn't there supposed to be two periods of increased chance of rainfall? I.e. rain-stop-rain?

All I found was a bit about there being "frequent rainfall". So I interpreted that to mean once per day there will be an storm, most likely in the afternoon. Did I miss where it was stated more explicitly?

In any case you could always ignore the rule that the chance of rain goes down to 5% for the rest of the day. :)

That's a pretty cool chart. I'd love to see a little variance in heat though.

Yeah, I stuck with simplicity. I figured that island temps don't vary all that much in the high summer unless it rains. I know it is inaccurate but since the characters don't have thermometers, I figured I could just go with mild, hot, and sweltering hot descriptions anyway. ;)

I was thinking more in terms of having days when the PCs aren't as impacted by the heat or some where it's worse for longer. Or even gives them an additional penalty to their save.

I updated the sheet with some optional variability. Still pretty simplistic, but it does the job I think. I also added in some other events that I had forgotten about.

Great work, but is there any reason why the Pdf has an additional blank page?

Heh, I didn't catch that. Should be fixed now. Thanks!

Excellent work, i've made something similar myself using excel. But your layout is a clear improvement and i will allow myself to be inspired by it ;)

Having spent some time in the sub-tropics. I find it is not the heat, but the Humidity that makes the temperature so oppressive.

As such, I randomly determined the temperature and humidity (from 75-85 F and 65-75%) for 30 days. From this, I caculated the Heat Index for each day to determine if the character's need to make rolls for high temperature.

This gave me 7 redline days where the character's need to make a roll every hour, 5 days were no roll is needed and 18 days where they only need to roll if they engage in strenous activity, like climbing or combat.

I think this gives a good mix of difficulties with the weather, without making it a daily issue.

I think you need to raise your temperatures an average of about 10 degrees. The highest "High Temperature" you have listed is only 85 degrees. Since the adventure is assumed to take place during high summer, your lowest temperature should be in the upper 80s.

I live in Jacksonville, FL, which is considered borderline temperate/sub-tropical. We've had temperatures in the low-to-upper 90s just about every day since June (95 is our average high temp this week). I definitely suggest you increase the heat on your chart. It should be swelteringly hot on the Shiv.

I've used THIS in my custom GM screen for quite some time.

It is essentially the same one built by Henrik Grönberg for the Liber Fanatica Game Master's Guide for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay.

I have tweaked it slightly to fit it into my use for Pathfinder. The temperatures are modified by climate zone and the effects are pretty basic.

By the time I finally get around to running Serpent's Skull I plan on just having the high temperature gig be a constant for the PC's and varying the wind and rain to make their lives miserable.

If that doesn't work then I guess it's the internet's way of telling me my table sucks a big one :)

Still no joy, I'm afraid!

So frustrating. Ah well here is my last shot at it. Then I will just slink away to a dark corner and plot the end of all things.

Linkavitch

Also, it's a bit of a sidetrack, but here is my full "miscellaneous" tab on my custom GM screen in case it turns out to be useful to anyone. I've uploaded it in PDF and Excel format for ease of editting. Again...this is all supposing I've done it right...

That's weird, I've been able to see the document on every link he's posted.
So yes it has been and is working Herbo.

I like the GM tab. The list of gods, months and days is very helpful. Thanks for posting it.

Wanted to thank SR2k for the great chart. It has been a big help for me. I am running a group of 7, so all the time I save by not flipping through pages looking for this information has been a big time saver. Great Job!
