Hey all,

I'm trying to convert Red Hand of Doom for my pathfinder game. I only found out yesterday that staves have changed. I don't think I have to change the staff of life, but the other one has a lot more charges than the new maximum of 10.
I read somewhere that the GM should be careful with scrolls as he would give out a lot of the same scrolls if he just follows the book. I was thinking about fudging this. The NPC's still have the scrolls and potions they have in the book, but when the PC's loot them, I take out my chart and roll some random scrolls and potions, so it won't seem so repetitive.
Finally, I'm gonna traumatize the players by saying that the goblins are really hobgoblin childsoldiers. I think it might be pushing the boundaries a bit too far, but they are dealing with an evil race. Is this a no-no?

Well given the direction that Red Hand of Doom goes, your probably safe just giving them the new staff instead of the old staff. Same for the scrolls and potions honestly. It's a lot of combat and you don't want to end up randomly giving your PC's a bunch of things that won't really be of use for them over the course of the adventure.

It's up to you how much drama you inject into your game too, if your players like that style of game play then go for it. If not, maybe it's best to keep it more basic. You know your group better then us.

Hrm, yeah. Well, the problem with the Pathfinder staves is that they only have 10 charges, while the 3.5 staves have 50. It doesn't matter when it comes to the staff of life, but there's another staff that has more than 10 charges. Giving them a staff with ''only'' 10 charges feels like robbing them of their treasure.
As for the scrolls, I've heard complains about them by players. The thing is, the way the NPCs are presented, they all have the same statistics, and thus the same loot. For example, there is a bunch of mages who all have the scrolls of Fly, Haste and Invisibility. This would mean that the party get's it's hands on several of these scrolls, which is not an ideal situation.

They only have 10 charges because they can be recharged unlike the 3rd edition staffs.

Well if that's the problem, have the mages use the scrolls. Monsters should have access to all the random loot that they're carrying after all. I actually think that was the intention for a lot of those scrolls.

Most of the bad guys are technically soldiers and have standard equipment. For mages that seems to be these scrolls and the idea is that they use them. If the players get the drop on them before they can buff, they get them. (I know, you know that, I'm just getting into the flow :D )

The first two ideas I had

- have them all with the same scrolls and provide plenty of opportunities for refugees or other people they meet (guard captains in the city, the dwarves, the elves etc) to trade for them. Those particular scrolls are great for fights, and the various NPC groups will want them for their own protection. If the PC's would rather have a Manticore Shield than three Fly scrolls then everybody's happy.

- have occasional NPC's with tattoos, braids in their hair and non-standard equipment. Give them a few +1 or +2s and make them a bit more 'elite' and thus granted leeway by their superiors. Think LURP in Vietnam... give them some loco weed for chilling out too.

What level is the party? That can have a big impact on what size and strength of the magic items you want to hand out. I think RHoD is designed for levels 5-9 or something like that so any casters would not be able to recharge the staff of life. Hmm... actually a level 9 cleric could cast "raise dead" to add one charge to the staff but that costs 5,000 gp worth of diamond dust. They would have to be level 11 to cast heal to add a charge to the staff of life.

I also agree with Carborundum to customize the loot list to make the players happy and give them something they can use.

Necro for current interest... Are there any other major overhauls needed?
