Homebrew Metamagic Feat: Accomplished Spellcaster

Homebrew and House Rules

Here's an idea I had for a new Metamagic feat. All the other Metamagic feats are about boosting power, increasing the spell level, etc. This one takes it in the opposite direction. It lets you prepare a spell using a spell slot one level lower than normal.

I know that you can always cast a spell using a lower caster level, but this is different -- it actually affects the spell slot you use to prepare a spell.

For example, fireball is a 3rd level spell. With this feat, you could prepare it as a 2nd level spell, and since you have more 2nd level spells than 3rd level spells, it means you could cast it more often than you would normally be able. Also, using the Pathfinder rules for cantrips, you could effectively turn magic missile into a 0-level spell, essentially making it an at will spell.

Accomplished Spellcaster (Metamagic)
Some spells are easier for you to cast.

Prereqisite: Spell Mastery

Benefit: Each time you take this feat, pick one spell from the list of spells you selected for Spell Mastery. That spell takes up a spell slot 1 level lower. You can take this feat multiple times. Its effects do not stack. Each time you take this feat, it applies to a different spell.

Well? What do you think?

Infinite Healing.

Recipe:

1 level of Wizard
1 level of Bard/Cleric/Druid
your feat.

Mix in a shaker, serve chilled.

Grand Lodge

What if it reduced the penalty that is imposed by metamagics, to a minimum of one, for that one spell? (Launching quicken at only 3 lvls higher, empowered at 2 lvls higher, etc.)

EDIT: You may also want to add a Pre-req be able to cast say 4th lvl Arcane spells, or something...

Ooh, good point! O_O

I was worried that the at will magic missile would be the game breaker, but this is worse. Bad idea!

Although Aeshuura's idea of having it lessen the spell slot penalty for other metamgic feats might be a way to salvage it.

Thanks for the quick input.

You can always limit it to arcane spells ... no wait, that won't work, Bard CLW is arcane >-<

Or just to spells of 2nd level and above.

If you use the HypertextD20 system that allows you to use a Metamagic 3 times a day, that might 'help'.

Aeshuura's idea is a solid one as well, and sounds more like what you may be looking for. hmm...

Accomplished Metamagic Caster (Metamagic)
Applying metamagic to certain spells are easier for you to cast.

Prerequisites: Spell Mastery, at least 1 Metamagic feat

Benefit: Each time you prepare spells, you may select one spell you selected for Spell Mastery. You may prepare that spell with a metamagic feat as normal, except: that metamagic/spell combination takes up a spell slot 1 level lower. You can take this feat multiple times. Its effects do not stack. Each time you take this feat, you may prepare another spell each time you prepare spells with a metamagic feat. You may even prepare a duplicate feat/spell.

Will that work?
