Welcome players!
Please get started on character sheets asap, by creating an alias and choosing an appropriate avatar. The sooner sheets are completed, the sooner we can get started!
Character creation guidelines:
-1st level characters
-20 point stat buy
-Max hit points
-2 traits (non-overlapping) You can choose a background trait from the Player's Guide if you like, but it's not mandatory.
-Average starting gold according to class
-No evil alignments
If there is anything I can do to be of assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know. Looking forward to a great game!

Hi scranford :) - seems we will fighting side-by-side in two pbps
I just realized something entertaining about the monk zen archer: his starting gold is not enough to buy a bow. Well almost, fortunately I can afford a shortbow.
I'll build the full profile for the character now; expect to see the final version up for inspection in a while.

How do we add HP when leveling up? Are we using Hero Points?
For future level ups, I think I'll have you guys roll, but the minimum will be half a hit die. So if you roll badly, you'll still get at least half.
I hadn't really thought about Hero Points. Do you (all of you, not just scranford) want to use them?

Hi. Turns out Yasumi is a girl - there really aren't many asian looking pictures available yet (here's hoping for a Tian Xia release in 2011!). Yasumi's ready for perusal, let me know if I messed up something.
I'm keen to try the hero points as they add a new dimension to play - but I don't feel particularly strong about it if it will burden you.
Pierre Bergadot
And here's Pierre, as a Cleric of Calistria. I decided to go down the Cleric route for a couple of reasons. I think it fits the character a touch better (and gives religious provocation for sleeping around) and also it'll help with the party synergy.
Character sheet should be fine. I'll add in a description, personality and background as we go along but I believe he's ready to rock 'n roll.

You know, with all the party balance considerations - I think we've now ended up without a tank/front-line fighter. Two casters and three ranged fighters.
Are we okay with that? Or should I rebuild into a melee character? I would be fine with that.
@Vic:
The rules on hero points are fairly long, so this is just a synopsis: Hero points are earned 1 per level, and occasionally the GM may award bonus hero points for special circumstances such as a really cool background story, completing a major arc, exceptional faith in ones deity, etc. A PC can have up to 3 hero points and NPCs don't have any. (Though feats and spells can change this.)
Hero points can be used in a number of ways:
- Get a free readied action
- Get a bonus action in your turn
- Get a bonus on a roll (or aid an allies roll)
- Get a hint from the GM
- Recall a spell
- Reroll a roll
- Petition the GM to allow a once-off "special" move that would normally not be feasible to attempt. Examples include: casting a spell if you aren't a caster, casting a higher level spell than you normally can, making an attack that bypasses DR, and so forth
- Cheat death: this is unique that it costs 2 hero points and allows your character to survive miraculously on negative hit points but stable
There exist feats that grant an additional hero point and a higher max (this can grant hero points to NPCs), gain 2 hero points per level instead of 1, have a 25% chance not to consume a hero point when you spend a hero point. Additionally, there exist spells and items that manipulate hero points or grant temporary hero points.

As for Hero Points, I'm not familiar with them, how do they work exactly? (I don't have the APG).
LoreKeeper's summary on hero points is right on the money, so I'll let that speak for itself.
On another note, picking up a PDF of the APG for $9.99 is an absolute bargain. Highly recommend.

Indeed, you're right. I guess I didn't realize that stardust's fighter was intended as a ranged combatant.
I'll leave it up to you as to whether you want to recast yourself as a front-line melee-type. It probably would be a wise choice in terms of party balance. But, having said that, I rather like Yasumi.
What say the other players?

Alloha :) - this is the story I have in mind for a tank character (barbarian):
Shakhan is furious. For years he was one of Gaedren's most prized fighters earning a bloody reputation in Korvosa's underground as one of the toughest, most singularly driven competitors. Not a slave to Gaedren's whims - Shakhan was the genuine article, a powerful veteran of the illegal cage matches.
It all fell apart a little more than two years ago, at the eve of Shakhan's retirement from the sport. Shakhan, following up on a long line of successive victories in a sport notorious for its unpredictability, was facing down his final opponent in a fight that drew the highest stakes the docks had seen in nearly two decades.
Shakhan lost the fight spectacularly. His limbs leaden, his vision blurred, he did little more than stand there while he was pummeled for minutes on end - transfixed by a poisoned drink Gaedren had offered him before the match, "for good luck".
Luck did indeed find him, unexpectedly, as he was left for dead in the gutters. He survived the poison, he survived his crushed skull, only Shakhan - the cage fighter - died that night.
But Shakhan, the man, survived. His injuries were grave indeed; his fractured skull left him addled - certainly not a simpleton, but his mind retained little of the sharp keenness it exhibited in his prime. His body suffered significantly as well, leaving little of his fighting ability intact.
He nurtured himself back to health over the course of two years; surviving in a dark subsistence in the slums of Korvosa. Where Gaedren had taken everything from him, the city provided shelter and scraps to eat. And time to rehabilitate.
Now, a good two years, Shakhan emerges from Korvosa's backalleys. A shadow of his former self - but a shadow driven to reclaim his former glory and a shadow that will wreak vengeance upon one Gaedren Lamm.

Strangefate, I looked over Vic, and it looks like there are a few issues to review.
1. He should have 9 hit points (maybe 10, see below)
2. He has at least one more skill point to spend (maybe two, see below)
3. Is his favored class rogue? If so, he can take a bonus skill point or hit point for that.
4. His REF save should be +6
5. CMD should be 16
6. Perform and Knowledge: Local skills can't be used untrained
Please have another look over the numbers and see if you agree/disagree with my assessments. Thanks!

stardust, I looked over Una, didn't really see any problems. One question though, what's the source for Oil of Guidance?
It's a potion of guidance, that I like to call an oil. :P
As for Una's lack of melee skills. With Rapid Reload and the 5-foot movement during combat actions, move back one space, reload, shoot will be a common tactic in "melee".
Barrdyn Klymeth
Barrdyn, I started to review Pierre, but I think we need to address his ability scores before proceeding further. I was able to recreate his present array with only an 18 point buy (assuming you put the +2 bonus for being human in WIS). Can you take another look please?
Breakdown:
Starting with 20 points:
Str (+2 points for dropping to 8)
Dex (-2 points for raising to 12, +2 from Human racial)
Con (untouched)
Int (-5 points for raising to 14)
Wis (-10 points for raising to 16)
Cha (-5 points for raising to 14)
Double checked the figures with my rulebook.

Oh, ok, thought there might be something more to it. Looks like Una's ready to roll then. :)

Barrdyn, thanks for explaining, I see what's happening. By doing things your way, you did indeed spend 20 points, but not as efficiently as you might have.
I automatically assumed that you had put Pierre's racial bonus into Wisdom (most people use the bonus to bump up the highest stat). Had you done so, this would now be an 18 point buy, not 20. So if you'd like to rework the numbers (and I recommend you do, why leave free ability points on the table after all?) just let me know.

His +3 to hit points makes me think he has a toad familiar. :)
Oh, and about Uma. This avatar reminds me of her too. I suppose we can say she is an inspiration for this character. :P

sorry. Morty is now on the profile.

Loremaster: Thanks for the summary. That all sounds good to me. I probably will have to grab the APG someday soon -- it's already everywhere -- but not right away.
GM: Fixed I believe. Thanks for pointing out the errors, all of which were to my character's detriment. (Whose side am I on, anyways? :) ) I did have Knowledge: Local marked as trained, but forgot to add the rank mod. I think that covers it, right?

Excellent work all around. I noted one other discrepancy when I tallied the cost for Vic's equipment, and I believe he should have just a bit more cash left...something on the order of 54 gp. I could be wrong though, I looked it over hurriedly. Still, if you want to double-check, there could be a few more coins in it for you!
Other than that, Vic looks great and ready to start. :)

Shakhan is ready for inspection. Sorry about the delay - the internet has been a bit flaky tonight. (I'm located in Southern Africa.)
No delay at all. In fact, I'm surprised and pleased at how quickly this has all come together.
I've looked over Shakhan, and have only one quibble. It appears that you've applied an armor penalty to his Acrobatics skill, but not to Climb or Swim. Further, the -2 penalty for his shield has not been applied at all. This may be an oversight, or it may be a deliberate choice. My preference, though, is to apply all ACP penalties to all affected skills. In play, the numbers can always be adjusted back up to reflect dropping the shield, removing armor, etc., prior to checks.
Otherwise, he looks great!
EDIT: Is it wrong that every time I type 'Shakhan' I think of Chaka Khan?
Shakhan
lol - no, Chaka Khan was not in my mind. I was kinda thinking of a combination of Shaka and the fearsome "Khan" moniker.
The ACP is my fault - and the stupid internet. I only added climb and swim at the end, as an afterthought. And since 90% of my characters are monks, I never really consider armor check penalties.
I'll fix it shortly :)
