Does winning ENnie Awards = More Sales?

Paizo and Pathfinder did, uh, quite -- well -- at this year's ENnie Awards at Gencon. I wonder if that'll translate into more fans of Pathfinder and the various products.

To be honest, part of the success is probably down to the number of fans they already had - certainly I only voted in the Ennies because I'm a fan of Paizo.

Wow! Quite a sweep! 11/22 awards go the golem!

- Best Game (!)
- Product of the Year
- Fan Award for Best Publisher
- Best Cover Art (Bestiary)
- Best Interior Art (Core Rulebook)
- Best Cartography (Map Folio)
- Best Production Values
- Best Adventure (AP #31: Stolen Land)
- Best Monster (Bestiary)
- Best Aid (GM Screen)
- Best Free Product (APG Playtest)

Congratulations team.

For a company like Paizo or WotC, I doubt there's much of an increased sale for high-profile products. The fact that they won a fan-based vote indicates that they're well known and the products are out there.

But I think a smaller publisher without the same level of publicity probably sees a modest increase in sales for being nominated. The additional publicity probably helps get them on the customer's radar. The same might be true for some products that are less well known from the bigger publishers on the nomination list.

Even so, I would think that the publicity must be helpful - at least a little.

I don't know about sales, but I imagine that it must be quite good for morale at a company, seeing their work so broadly acknowledged and commended by the industry in which they work... :)

I would not be quite so quick to discount the sales benefit. There has to be some number of people that have heard of Pathfinder but never gave it a try. When they hear of THAT many Ennies, some percentage of those people will certainly pick up the Core Book PDF at the very least to see for themselves.

I would be pretty shocked if this does't have a positive impact on sales!

I agree but I think the voting may have been meant as a slap in the face to Wotc.

I also wonder if it's better to be Pathfinder and win or be little company like Exile Game Studio to get an Ennie who is doing this wonderful game called Hollow Earth Expedition that no one but me, my friends, and three other people have heard of.

All the Best,

Oh, I know of EXILE and have Hollow Earth. Like the world (pulp but in a different time) and dice mechanism; in fact, would love the latter to be its own supp.

They still lost the Pepsi Challenge, and that's what really matters.

I think they ought to print up gold and silver medal stickers to slap on all their award-winning products. :D

I'm sure people get interested in games after they win awards.

It shouldn't hurt sales at least, right?
Now let's just hope they don't get big headed.

My guess (and it's strictly a guess) is that nominations/wins help smaller press products. Wins probably don't bump larger-scale products noticeably, but i could be wrong.

I started a poll on this question over at ENWorld.

While I'm no marketing expert, it is my field and I would say that these kind of awards definitely have an impact on sales, for the products themselves and future products.

For the specific product, it could turn event existing fans to a specific item. For example, I bet they see a big boost in sales for Classic Horrors Revisited, a product many fans may have overlooked.

However, awards aren't just about sales, but branding - Paizo is becoming known for quality products and as the best alternative to WotC. This has long term benefit.
