::Team Chimera::
Vincenzo De Luca - Cleric of Desna (Ice Titan)
Rhys Forgarson - Ranger (Reycied)
Halsanna - Crossbowoman Fighter (Me'mori)
Tragershen - Wizard (markofbane)
Blackleaf - Barbarian/Ranger? (seekerofshadowlight)
This is the Out-Of-Character Thread for for one of Serpent's skull groups. I'll look over each character in detail with my fine toothed comb. If everybody would check over their backgrounds, finalize profile's and alias's.
-------The Player Characters--------
Vincenzo De Luca, an older human cleric filled with wunderlust. One of his dreams is to explore the Mwangi Expanse. Boarded the ship in Magnimar and has been aboard the ship the longest except for the crew.
Rhys Forgarson, a dark haired half-elf. A forlorn and withdrawn individual, who offers his services as a guide of the wilds. Recently joined the other passengers from the Bloodcove. Possibly hired on as a guide?
Tragershen, a joyful elven wizard fascinated by the mysteries of the Mwangi Expanse. He has almost gleefully set out after a lifetime of study. Boarded the vessel at one of the Cheliax ports shortly after Vincenzo.
Blackleaf, a feral elf. Also filled with a desire to explore the world he has signed onto the crew of the Jenivere in order to see as much as he can. Blackleaf has been on board since the boat set sail and is familiar with the other crew and captain. (I assume?)
Me'mori which of your two would you prefer to play. The fighter or the rogue? I said the fighter in the other thread but I meant the rogue... I like the story of both of them but fighter's combat style overlaps with Reycieds character. Also a rogue may be useful for the skills they bring (and alchemical items are fun).
I'll post again with details on the ship. We'll figure out when everyone boarded and how/if they know each other, the crew, and the other passengers.

I was really thinking of blackleaf as a two handed ranger with monstrous humanoids as a FE.
That would work well. Rhys is a crossbow wielding ranger using the Guide archtype. So he has no specific favored enemy or animal companion. I don't expect there to be much overlap between the two.
It's not too late for you guys to make changes if you want. Especially if there's anything that intrigues you from the APG.
Me'mori
Nichelle it will be then.
Hah! We're two humans short of an all-elf party! *laughs* missed by thaaaaaat much!
Oh, if anyone wants Nichelle to have Thieves' Tools, she's taking donations.. 'cause that traveling alchemist's setup wiped her out. The poor lass' got 5c to her name. *makes a note to make acid*
Tragershen
I had a couple questions on Tragershen's equipment. He bought a ring from the ROTRL Player's Guide, a ring with a hidden compartment. He plans at some point to mount a pearl inside the compartment with a continual flame cast on it.
Second, he is aware of the jungle rains that he faces, so he wants a waterskin designed to hold his spellbook and protect it in downpours. Any thoughts on that?
Me'mori
Nichelle: "Alchemy! Waterproof it... 'course, that might make it require special ink to write on it, and then it'd be a big magical headache, 'cause who's to say the ink won't run, unless maybe it was a special ink, and then it could glow under magical light! ...Hm, but the components would probably be hard to find, and even if they weren't, if you spilled the ink or something happened, you wouldn't be able to write, and then..."
*closes her back up in her box* You're right. Good question. That girl needs a pair of spectacles, really, she does.

Yup, I'm cool with the ring. I like the idea! Nothing weird or cheesy about it, not more than light on a rock in a sack.
And you mean like a waterproof bag for 5sp?
Me'mori
*grins, rubbing hands together* I just realized something.. Craft(Alchemy) may be used to create various odd things, but also it means that 'Kel likely knows how to: mix drinks, and also create seasonings and sauces... Oh yes.. If you're up for a challenge, try a sample of her "fireball" sauce for meats.. Goodness, I'm going to have so much fun writing her!
I'd get her a notebook to take notes in, but the poor thing is already 1lb away from "heavily encumbered".

Wouldn't that be Profession (cooking)?
Also these items might interest you.
Alternate Racial trait;
skilled with crowds. They gain a +1 bonus on Ref lex saves
and a +1 dodge bonus to Armor Class when adjacent to at
least two other allies. Crowds do not count as difficult
terrain for them. This racial trait replaces the skilled
racial trait.
Rogue Archtype (Poisoner);
the use of poison and cannot accidentally poison herself
when applying poison to a blade. This ability replaces
trapfinding.
Though I think you may have that second one but just not the ability written down on your alias?
Reycied
Been brushing over Rhys, and I have to say, I think he's well and truly prepped. I also browsed through the other characters, and I'm very much looking forward to roleplaying with everyone. Especially since I've played with Scipion and Me'mori in the past, and I know how much face they rock. :)
Me'mori
Oops. Thanks for the heads-up. I forgot to account for skilled, and had Poison Use under Special Attacks in Offense, and not under Abilities.
As for Profession(Cooking), I would agree that it is used in the preparation of food prior to consumption. However, I would say that Craft(Alchemy) is more suited to rendering various herbs and roots into a form that is suitable to be applied to the food.
After all, when you can make Alchemist's Fire, turning that insanely hot pepper picked right off of the plant into a liquid or drying it out and grounding it into a powder that can be applied to food should be a rather mundane chore. (At least when you accidentally knock over the container, you just make a mess and maybe sneeze instead of probably having to go get a new table)
I stand by her being an awesome mixologist, though. Alcohol is a poison, after all.. It's just a matter of camouflaging the taste.
Me'mori
..But then my girl won't be as inclined to be all starry-eyed! After all, why only have two elves when there can be three? *Ponder* --then again.. If he's the "brooding, bad boy type"-- Will he have a tail? :p
Your character. Until they meet, they'll never have met.

I did not give Blackleaf much gear, he has armor and weapons and is just off the boat {literary it seems} and is more of a transient then anything
Since he's a member of the crew he has been on the ship since the last time it swung by Mwangi. So if you want to have him pick up some gear at one of the many ports that is fine.
Also I don't know why they recommended monstrous humanoid as a favored enemy... unless you're dead set on it I would "hint" that you change it. The majority of the AP takes place in a jungle so animals, plants, and undead pretty good bets. I'm sure the later books will have a ton of monstrous humanoids though...
Scipion del Ferro RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4
-sputter- OF COURSE he'll have a tail! What kind of joint do you think I'm runnin' here?! -stern look-
A sneaky demon-ranger a-sneakin' through the jungle just HAS to have the tip of his tail twitching like a cat about to pounce. I think that's a RULE. :3
I like the 100 Tiefling traits from Council of Thieves.

ah ok, animal it is then. It was recommended and seemed to fit his background. I blew most his cash on a chain shirt, and just picked a CLW up to blow another large hunk to be honest as I didn't feel he would be heavy geared.

Ah, one more elf, and we could have redone the Three Musketeers!
Hey, your tail-guy's got my approval!
SdF, out of curiosity, how similar is that list to THIS one?
Pretty much the same idea.
Bosun
Journey of Jenivere
Now includes when the PC's boarded! As well as the colors I'll use for your tokens.
Me'mori
Hrm.. I never thought of including descriptions of my equipment-- mostly because most details I added were never used.. I must improve my word-fu.
In her case, it fits anyway. Personalizing touches just help one be identified, and regardless of her vocation, she still is a rogue. Simple and utilitarian is for the best.
As an aside, I only just figured out how the forum Aliases work. One post and they're cemented, able to edit the name, but that's it.. Ten and they're set forever.
Me'mori
True.. I see those avatars and am surprised when the name doesn't match.
Alright.. since everyone seems to be settling into the idea of their characters, given the time aboard the ship, how well does everyone know each other?
In 'Kel's case, she literally got hustled onto the ship one night before departure, and didn't join until nearly half of the Jenivere's trip. After that, quite literally the next day, she went about demonstrating her facility with compounds and mixtures, improving the alcohol kept on board by a noticeable margin, as well as making herself handy in spicing up the fare. All elves will have to work through that romanticized stigma that popular non-elven culture would have portrayed them as. If she is in the middle of explaining something, and her mind goes off on a tangent, her mouth will follow as she thinks aloud.
Blackleaf is a curiosity to her, and would likely watch him with wide eyes, curious as one with a high int/low wis would be. His tattos are fascinating to her, having gotten hers not too long ago, marveling at the extent he was covered. His feral nature is quite frankly intriguing to her.
Tragershen would be noticed, watched for a bit, and ignored initially, until he got to talking, and provided he was talking about something that she had at least a clue of, she would join in enthusiastically-- and getting her to talk about alchemy is asking to have your head talked off. Magic is a curious subject, and she'll listen attentively, but unless it is grounded with some sort of rationale, her attention will probably start to drift.
Vinchenzo is probably the unwanted father figure on her trip (yes, her trip). Still, he's Varisian, and a follower of Desna-- even though she more of a 'luck' type-- so they probably get along pretty well, and she was raised to respect her elders and the priests, so he's probably the main reason she hasn't gotten out of hand on the trip.
Rhys is the most different, therefore she'll be the most curious about him. After all, one can't expect to walk onto a ship in a cloak and mask and hood and not have her as curious as all get out. She'll keep her distance from him until he starts to open up --if he ever starts to open up to the resident mixer-- and she'll eventually decide that he's not as bad as he looks (which will probably be about the time that things start happening)
Reycied
I know it will probably never come up, but I like to think that adding little details to your equipment--like custom modifications they've made, personal touches and whatnot--really bring them to life. Any fool can have a scimitar, but how many people have a broader-than-average scimitar decorated with fangs and feathers? It's something unique to your character that sets him or her apart from any other. ...or maybe I'm just a dingus.
Also, I don't think I can imagine a world where Scipion isn't Supreme Dictator Lincoln.
EDIT: Hmm...I think that once the ship docked in Bloodcove, Rhys just sort of drifted aboard after paying his fare. He doesn't really talk to anybody unless they talk to him first, and generally spends most of him time couched at the starboard railing watching the world slither by.
seekerofshadowlight
I put gear description in a general description area but I do like how ya have it on it's own there. I may need to start stealing that.
As for the ship, Blackleaf has been on it a long while, been working as part of the crew since it sailed from Magnimar. He is kinda a striking looking fellow and would be hard to miss to anyone who stayed on the ship long.
Of coarse he is not all that great a sailor, mostly moving things or hauling cargo and deck work or brawling, drinking and wrenching when in port.
Me'mori
Nichelle in port with the sailors... Eh, she's smarter than that. She'd probably pair up with Vinchenzo, or run errands for the ship's cook or the sailors. Sleight of Hand would keep her in minimal pocket change, though the scarf would start to become unberably hot.

I use those for my home game in place of the racial darkness ability. Some are... let's say, more powerful, than others.
I figured Vincenzo would be the loud and friendly guy on the trip. Introduced himself to everyone, tells meandering and ridiculous stories he's heard at dinner, that kind of thing. Tries to get to know everyone and remembers everyone's name... Trades stories he's heard about wild Mwangi tribesmen and ancient cities full of lost gold and such. I imagine that his excitement about the unknown world would fuel Vincenzo's story embellishing fires.
Tragershen
Tragershen is likely to be distant and still almost like a statue. If he overhears any talk of their destination, his face lights up and he joins the conversation politely and eagerly, hoping for news or stories of the destination. If someone actively engages him in conversation, they'll find within a minute or two that Tragershen has found a way to steer the conversation to discussing the Expanse; people with no interest in it learn quickly to avoid him. Questions about where he is from or what he did before this will be met with a heavy sigh and a vague and dismissive statement like "wasted decades not doing what I was meant to" or "waiting for my chance at something great".
I suspect Tragershen and Vincenzo will hit it off well.
seekerofshadowlight
I started as a Barb but changed him to ranger. I also have this thing about stats below 10, so unless my concept calls for it I do not dump stats below 10. So str of 16 is as good as he got, still not to bad all and all.
I toyed with fighter as well, but I am to much a skill point whore to play something with 2 skills per level without boosting the hell out of INt, which kills spreading points elsewhere. But two handed fighter soooooooo tempted, but the lack of skill points kept me away with blackleaf.
Me'mori
I can't get into the mindset of the front-liner, though I've got an idea for a Superstitious Barbarian along the lines of the Forsaker-- or more accurately the old 1e?2e? Barbarian that was anti-magic.
The new monk types have brought my interest back to the Monk, though.. I'm a monk fan from 3.0 days.
Rhys Forgarson
In the tabletop iterations I've done my share of frontlining. My Kingmaker Paladin is a little bastard at maintaining hate. Full plate, long sword, heavy steel shield and furious devotion to Iomedae.
EDIT: I didn't give it any thought when I made the character, but now I'm torn--how to pronounce Rhys' name? In modern naming conventions, the name "Rhys" is often pronounced "Reese" or "Reez". And yet, whenever I pronounce it in my head, I find myself saying "Rise". Anybody have any suggestions?

Kingmaker paladin buddies!
Hm. I was pronouncing Rhys as "riss," myself.
