Walcourt map question.

Council of Thieves

On the maps for Walcourt in the second half of the Mother of Flies, there are little circles on each floor that are darkened and contain a letter on it. However, I can't find in the building or room descriptions what these are. The main floor has one with a "c" in the secret entrance hall. The second floor has a few "c"s in various rooms. What are these for? Are they vents for Ilnerik to move about the guildhouse? Or are these something else. I'm running this in a few hours so immediate responses would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Nevermind :). Did some more in depth reading and ralized what each one was. Takes a bit of digging but they all make sense to me now.

Sorry, Cyrus. It's kind of an old-school map icon, and I sometimes take for granted that everyone knows what I am thinking. :-)

We've got a big list of "standardized" map symbols in the GameMastery Guide. I've been toying with doing some sort of standardization in the APs as well... but since every author has their own quirks with mapping, and we don't always have the time or resources to redraw every map before giving them over to the cartographer... fully standardizing map symbols is a pretty complex problem (and that's even before factoring in the fact that we use multiple cartographers).

But yeah...

A circle with an "F" in it is a trap door in the floor. A circle with a "C" in it is a trap door in the ceiling.

Oh, interesting ... I remember a lot of 1st edition AD&D modules in which ''c' inside a circle was a concealed door - that's actually what I thought James was going to say here!

Actually... if I remember right, the concealed door symbol in the old 1st Ed modules was just a "C" drawn in place of the door symbol, in the same way we still denote secret doors with an "S".

You know, you might be right. I'll have to go pull out a few old modules and check ...

I actually put my one of those old-school concealed door symbols on the map of Walcourt. :-) It got edited into a secret door symbol though before publication.

I do recall seeing on some of the old Basic/Expert D&D products produced in the UK that concelaed doors and secret doors were sometimes represented by their respective letters in a circle rather than just simply drawn on the wall line like is in use currently.
