Earthbreaker vs DR

Rules Questions

Hello folks,

I heard (inadvertendly) one of my players complain about the fact that I allowed a 1d12 x3 blunt weapon in my game. The amount of monsters with DR/Bludgeoning seems to be the culprit but I'm not aware of a particularly large number of monsters with such a DR compared to slashing or piercing.

Am I mistaken?

Thanks!

It isn't the damage that it could do vs DR (2d6, not 1d12), it's that the weapon's statistics don't make sense when compared to the rest of the weapons on the chart. I heard a similar complaint with the Taldan(?) sword-axe.

IIRC, the discussion I had about it was that the damage or the critical multiplier are too high for a standard martial weapon. Something about a "balance" issue, I believe. There were no complaints about it being a weapon if it were exotic, but as a martial weapon, it's "overpowered".. At least, to follow the trend of weapon construction.

Any more than that, I couldn't tell you. I only had an ear and a half on the conversation, and seem to recall something about it being mostly a Shoanti weapon, as well as an entry somewhere mentioning that access to an Earthbreaker without being of one of the Shoanti tribes (or having an affiliation) is somewhat difficult.

What is the argument for this?

Let's compare :

Greatsword : 2d6, 19-20 x2
Greataxe : 1d12, 20 x3
Earthbreaker (Greatmaul) : 2d6, 20 x3

Now the d12 is the same as the 2d6 (minus 0.5 dmg), follows the same size change rules, the crit range is the same, no added crit multiplier, etc.

This weapon is balanced, I can see an argument for the DR thing but then it really depends on the type of creature encountered. But so does elemental damage spells. You won't object to a sorcerer to research a frost version of scorching ray if the campaign is set in a volcano underground complex.

Also, the +1d6 elemental enchants for weapons cost all the same, although you can prove some resistances/immunities are more present in the monsters' stats than others.

Pretty much what I'm thinking Jelly. Are you aware of a good amount of DR/bludgeoning monsters? Besides skeleton-based mobs(lich, and various undeads), I really couldn't come up with any others.

Said complainy player wants to get his hands on a falchion so he's not on high ground in terms of balanced weaponry.

Not too many.

Skeletal Champion: 5/bludgeoning
Skeleton: DR 5/bludgeoning
Gibbering Mouther: DR 5/bludgeoning
Xorn: DR 5/bludgeoning
Lich: DR 15/bludgeoning and magic
Golem, Clay: DR 10/adamantine and bludgeoning
Vegepygmy: DR 5/slashing or bludgeoning
