Just half a year ago, you witnessed the crowning of Kobold Quarterly’s first ever King of the Monsters: the spark and its designer Adam Daigle took on all comers and stood victorious. However, Monster Island is a dangerous place, and its rulers never last long…
Behold the King of the Monsters, the greatest and most glorious contest ever! Welcome to Kobold Quarterly’s second semiannual tournament of monster design where you, the fans, test your skills by designing amazing monsters that are evaluated by a panel of industry professionals and by the fans themselves, all for fame and prizes! It’s easy to enter the arena: you simply design a monster and submit it in.
Here’s how it works: To enter the contest, your monster submission MUST…
- Be sent to the King of the Monsters Contest no later than Friday, August 13th, by noon PST. (That’s only 3-1/2 weeks from now! It’s a little longer than last time, but we wanted to give Gen Con goers a little extra time.)
- Be submitted as a doc, docx, or rtf attachment.
Read KotM2 Submission [insert monster name] in the email’s subject line. Your full name and contact information should be in the body of the email (not in your attachment).
- Be designed for Pathfinder Roleplaying Game/3rd Edition D&D or for 4th Edition D&D.
- Be 800 words or less and contain 1 full statblock (no more, no less) and the appropriate flavor text and lore to flesh out your creation.
(You should look to previously published Monday Monsters for insight about format and content. The splicer beast and Xaldraxis are good examples.)
We are looking for monsters of all kinds and all levels. Even a CR 1/4 Small reptilian humanoid can rise to be king!
Check out the full post here!

Only 18 days left! Have you entered Kobold Quarterly's King of the Monsters 2 contest yet?

I'm not allowed either, but that hasn't stopped me from trying to swindle Scott into letting me try and keep my crown.
I first tried a loophole. One the original blog post, Scott referred to me as the "defending champion", but if I can't compete, how can I defend?
That didn't work.
I'll get you, Scott, and it will all be mine....MINE!
...or maybe I'll just judge. :)

Yeah, that's right - hide behind the "rules" and being a "special guest star judge". You're just afraid of a top ten rematch! ;)
My monster will destroy you all - this time!* Bwahahahaha!

Dementrius, Re: Spoiler. No rubber masks. Instant disqualification. ;)
Seriously though...
I have no idea how many entries Scott and Wolfgang have received so far, but you've got 2 weeks to cram their inbox with some of the most fantastic, horrific, and most importantly, creative critters your design brains can conjure.
I don't know what I have in store for me judging this contest, but I really hope that when I get home from GenCon, those pesky kobolds will have a ton of monsters ready for review.
C'mon folks, get to designin'!

So how strict is the 800 words or less. I cannot seem to get mine down to under 800 (currently 1026) words without basically cutting all of the fluff materials.
I would imagine it's strict.
take a look at your text sections and jot down the concept, then try rewriting it. Too much cutting can leave you reading very choppy text.

OK then I have another question. The creature I made has several abilities and rather than using a entry that looks like this:
Maddening Cacophony (Su) as a free action, a Starfall Progeny can give voice to sounds and words sane life was not meant to hear. All creatures in a 60-foot radius must make a DC 14 Will save or be confused for 1d6 rounds. Each round a creature is affected it takes 1d6 points of Wisdom damage. A creature that saves cannot be affected by this Starfall Progeny’s maddening cacophony for 24 hours. This is a sonic mind-affecting effect. The save DC is Charisma-based.
And instead use a entry that looks like this:
Maddening Cacophony DC 14 (Su) See Shoggoth Pathfinder Bestiary

Ack, don't post your material here (or anywhere else publicly), or you risk disqualification! I'm sorry, but as one of the judges, I stopped reading your post once I realized what it was, and I won't comment on your material.

Remember kids, Monsters don’t exist on their own. They need you.
Friday is the deadline, get those critters in!

Time's almost up! There's just 2 short days to get your entries in for the King of the Monsters contest.
Send us your original monsters for 4E or Pathfinder/3.5E. They'll be judged by some of the most highly talented game designers in the industry--including Jason Bulmahn (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game lead designer), Logan Bonner (prolific 4E freelance designer), and Wolfgang Baur (industry veteran with a tremendous list of RPG credits to his name).
Win prizes and bragging rights! Have your monster illustrated in Kobold Quarterly magazine! Don't let this opportunity pass you by.
Good luck!

Of course, some Pathfinder fans may appreciate the great writing and chilling concepts that went into those 4E monsters. I mean, the Horahk lays eggs in your eyeballs. That's edition neutral good fun.
Edition neutral be damned!!!! Pathfinder fans unite!!!!! Vote for the Pathfinder monsters!!!!
Ahem ... sorry, I'm calm now :)
And I was kidding by the way ... mostly ;)

Tomorrow's your last day to vote!
The crown is up for grabs, and you actually get to choose your new overlord! Who else offers that?
Right now, there's a good possibility that eye patches will come back in style real fast, but it's not over yet. With more than 24 hours remaining, who knows what could happen.
This one's to rule them all!
