The latest post over on my blog, Intelligence Check, deals with weapons that are also built to be musical instruments.
There's little mechanical reason for such things, but you know what? When your character is a ranger that's dressed in green, sometimes you just want a dagger that can be played like a flute. Go figure. As such, I've written basic rules for weapon-instruments, with a couple of examples given.
Check them out here: Play That Deadly Music, Baby.

the dragon dagger, you went there!!!!! awesome
in my game i just gave the bard a mithral "electric" guitar (its strings are made of force) that splits into a mithral +1 longsword that lets him add 1/2 his level to damage when performing and attacking, and a mithral heavy shield that gives sonic resist 5

Awesome weapon there, far more practical in terms of mechanical benefits than what I wrote. I just wasn't sure to what degree to assign additional penalties or bonuses based on the modifications of adding musical functionality to a weapon, so in the end I stayed fairly middle of the road, leaving it to be more of a flavor change than anything else.
