Damage Reduction

Rules Questions

I just read on the Core Rulebook page 562 the following:

Spells, spell-like abilities, and energy attacks (even nonmagical fire) ignore damage reduction.

Does this mean that a creature with DR 99 versus fire still takes damage from a fireball? This seems counter-intuitive to me.

it would be called Fire Resistance 99, not DR: 99/fire, that is where your making a mistake.

Good point. Thanks for the clarification. That's what I get for trying to do 3 things at once :-)

You'll never see DR vs fire or any other element. That's the domain of energy resistance.

The DR/- granted by a barbarian doesn't apply to any spell damage unless the spell in question specifically says it does.

I think there are a few spells that conjure rocks or crystals and throw them at a target that say that DR applies, but they're the exception to the general rule.

interestingly I made a mistake on that last post, the way I typed it the creatures DR would be by past by fire, (FACEPALM)

Correct. Damage reduction and energy resistance are two separate entities. You generally won't see a stat block where a creature has damage reduction versus a specific type of attack. Rather, their damage reduction applies universally but may be negated by a specific type of attack.

Which is why you won't generally see DR: 99/not fire or DR: 99 not silver. What you would see is DR: 99/cold iron or DR: 99/silver and holy (for example). Hope that helps.
