Haidar and Lycanthropy

Legacy of Fire

Hey folks!

We had to break right in the middle of the Refuge of Nethys, which is handy because they haven't reached Haidar yet, and I have questions about how others have handled his lycanthropy. I'm a fairly new GM, and all I've seen so far with regards to lycanthropy cures is Belladonna.

I'd like to be prepared in case someone fails their fort save, which may just happen with my all miniatures group ;) Halflings, gnome, one dwarf. I'll probably give the Moldspeaker a big boost to his throw, but all the rest may be in trouble.

Has anyone had a PC infected by Haidar? How have you handled this? I'm assuming Zastoran might be able to whip something up, but I made the river crossing from the monastery to Nethys somewhat difficult and they'll need to cart the infected party back over the river.

Alternatively, I could make finding a cure a longer quest for that character. Are there other options for cures that folks have used in other campaigns?

The Exchange

None of my PCs got infected (altought one got very close while using the cursed dagger), but how you handle this really depends on how difficult you want the availability of the cure to be.

If you don't want to deal with a cursed PC, just have Zastoran take a look at the wounds, confirm that the PC is cursed and then pull out some belladonna or a dusty potion of remove curse that he was keeping in case of emergency (but that he'll only give away for a price).

If you want to make it a quest, have Oxward or Feliped reveal that they had a potion of remove curse or two in their backpack, but their gear is currently in a room of the Battle Market so the PCs would have to go take it from there.

In my campaign, my PCs spared Haidar and brought him back as a prisonner. Once the cleric PC had access to remove curse, he casted it on Haidar, who was so gratefull that he decided to stay in Kelmarane and use his experience as an Osiriani nobleman to help Almah by serving in the new town's administration.

Spoiler:
I'd recommend that you eliminate any chance of catching lycanthropy from Haidar unless you would like to play out the party's quest to deal with the curse. Make them roll saves and let them wonder, but save the curse for whoever wields the dagger. This reduces the chance that party members will be accursed before they have the resources to deal with such an affliction.

I wouldn't mind having them play through being infected as a part of the story... Correct me if I'm wrong, but if a PC is infected, he doesn't actually change until the next full moon, correct?

If that's so, I'm thinking I could use lycanthropy, should someone fail a save, for two dual purposes:

1) To heighten the sense of danger and risk with combat. ("Dude, last time you became a were-leopard. Don't just charge in this time...")
2) To create some urgency for taking Kelmarene. Zastoran doesn't have the proper drugs, but Almah posits that Kelmarene had an old apothocary (or whatever it was called in the market) and there may be supplies there...

I could tell them the next full moon is in 2 days or something to get them jumping... Hummmm.

I'm thinking of picking up the "Curse of the Moon" PDF from Sean K Reynolds. Does anyone else have this? Or is anyone aware of a PFRPG conversion for it?

Liberty's Edge

I had them bargain with Undrella for the cure. Three of the six were inflicted. It was a good tension builder.
