So when throwing a sword or a battleaxe with the throw anything feat, how much damage do they do?

Quote:
Improvised Weapons: Sometimes objects not crafted to be weapons nonetheless see use in combat. Because such objects are not designed for this use, any creature that uses an improvised weapon in combat is considered to be nonproficient with it and takes a –4 penalty on attack rolls made with that object. To determine the size category and appropriate damage for an improvised weapon, compare its relative size and damage potential to the weapon list to find a reasonable match. An improvised weapon scores a threat on a natural roll of 20 and deals double damage on a critical hit. An improvised thrown weapon has a range increment of 10 feet.

The way I see this if you are throwing an actual weapon not intended to be thrown you would still use the longsword or battle axe damage but the crit range would be 20/x2. I've heard several other people suggest that when you throw weapons they would do less damage.

How do you figure out how much damage a weapon not intended to be thrown does?

Silver Crusade

I have misinterpreted rules before, so I might be wrong.

Looking at some of the light melee and one-handed melee weapons that can also be thrown, I see the same damage in either case (a dagger inflicts 1d4 whether wielded in melee or thrown). Based on that, I would conclude that a thrown longsword would inflict the same damage as if it were wielded, but it would have a smaller critical range (20 instead of 19-20). Plus the thrower would have a penalty to hit unless he had the Throw Anything feat.

I think the comparison language is really meant for something really unorthodox, such as a brick. The GM might decide that a thrown rock or brick resembles brass knuckles and assign 1d3 damage, or perhaps a mere club and assign 1d4 damage.

One guy I know has an elvish wizard of the universalist school. He is thus able to throw a weapon with which he is proficient, so he uses the longsword and gets the full 1d8 damage. Of course, that's magic, so it has its own logic.
