i'm really not a fan of the craft skill as it is for crafting weapons and armor. i'm wondering if taking this feat would be worth it to take in a low magic game? if we get a decent amount of gold, could i just use this feat to craft a badass item?
so, can someone explain how this works with crafting an item from scratch? do i need to craft the item first or can i just start crafting it magically with only the components there? how long will it take? do i used the crafting item skill, or magic item creation to determine the time? also, can this be used to improve a current item?

Master Craftsman essentially allows you to treat your ranks in Craft X as a caster level for making magic items and to use that skill in place of spellcraft when doing so. If you had Master Craftsman (Jeweler) you might take Craft Wondrous or Craft Ring, but not Craft Magic Arms and Armor. Likewise, with Craft (Weapon) you would only really take Craft Magic Arms and Armor.
At least, that's my understanding.
Step 1: Take Craft (Weapons) skill
Step 2: Take Master Craftsman (Weapons)
Step 3: Take Craft Magic Arms and Armor
Step 4: Make a masterwork weapon, as per normal rules
Step 5: Enchant it using your Craft (Weapons) skill instead of your spellcraft skill. For Caster Level prerequisites use your ranks in Craft (Weapons).
Step 6: ?
Step 7: Profit
Note: Step 4 can be pushed back as far as step 2.
Other note: You can never use this to make spell trigger/completion items such as Wands, Staves or Scrolls.

The longest any item should ever take you is 100 days (hastily crafting a +10 equivalent weapon from a masterwork one) on the magic end. Hastily crafting this is only a DC25 (maybe higher if you try to add a +4 equivalent and don't get a spellcaster to help, at most DC30), with full ranks and skill focus that's impossible to fail. Heck, throw on a +15 item and you don't need the skill focus and can't fail the hardest item crafting in the game.
As far as taking forever to make the base weapon.. Well, that's life. If at 20th level you have a +28 bonus you can rush the masterwork component by increasing the DC to 30. Take 10 for a 38 and you have 30*38 or 1140 silver pieces of progress a week, for about 3 weeks to make the masterwork weapon. If you want to go faster get a +15 item (22,500 gp) for a total mod of +43. This puts you at a take-10 of 53. Accelerate the DC to 50 for 2650sp per week, or taking roughly 9 days.
This puts you at a total of 109 days from scrap to legend. This is roughly 3.5 months. Not bad, really.

Also check around on paizo or their boards... there's atleast one person who's complained on the same thing and has been trying fix the crafting system... there's also a nice $.99 pdf available for download on this website:

Anyway yes you can just modify an item with this feat. It's just cheaper to make your own.
