I've some questions regarding a monster without official Pathfinder-stats (the Azlanti Carrion Beetle) and a monster variant from the Almanach of Classic Monsters (the Lizardking).
1. Would you tunr the Carrion Beetle into a Magical Beast? I know they are Vermin in 3.5, but it just doesn't feel right: they have intelligence, and they have a hypnotic carapace that used to fire rainbowy death on enemies. And it generally seems to be a artifically created "warmachine". And even if not, all those magical abilities and the high intelligence sound definitely more like Magical Beast.
2. What's the CR for a Lizardking? It's nowhere in the Almanach. I tried to check this nice "HD-CR"-Table for the Bestiary, but that didn't work for the Flinds, either. D20pfsrd suggests a CR of 3, but that sounds a bit low considering a HD boost from 2 to 5 and a size increase.

Apologies for the thread necromancy, but the second question is pertinent to the game I'm about to DM. Though, my game is a 3.5 campaign, that shouldn't be an issue since the book we're talking about was printed for 3.5.
So, what is the CR of the "Lizard King" variant of the Lizardfolk in Classic Monsters Revisited?

CR is notoriously arbitrary.
My best advice is to find something with similar stats and extrapolate from there. I'm honestly unfamiliar with the creature (template??), but if they gave stats and no CR, look for an errata. If its just a description in the "ecology of lizardmen" or something, it's up to you to fill in the blanks.
Play testing goes a long way (post your results).
The Lizard King is a variant Lizardfolk with size Large and 5 HD. So, apply the normal rules for advancing a creature from Medium to Large and from 2 Humanoid HD to 5 Humanoid HD. In 3.5, that would mean an increase from a normal Lizardfolk's CR 1 to CR 3.
In addition to that, I'd probably give it a class level or two, which would also apply the elite array.
