Class abilities - multiclass

Rules Questions

Liberty's Edge

I have a question on class abilities. Lets use the cleric fire domain as an example. A cleric levels to level 7, having gaining the Fire Resistance 10 at level 6. The character then takes two levels of a clerical prestige class, then resumes cleric at CL 10, taking it up to CL12 (7 CL -> 2 PR ->3 CL). Does the cleric now have the fire resist 20 that is indicated in the power they already attained at 6 as it upgrades at level 12?

Increased caster level does not affect anything other than spells, so no. The character would need to gain 5 more cleric levels after multi/prestige classing to gain Fire Resist 20.

While I would agree that this is what is ment, I can see it taken the other way. It also does NOT say caster level, It just stats your level.

Progress in a prestige class does not count towards advancement of any class abilities unless specifically specified in the prestige classes's text.

Your example would have clerical abilities of a 10th level cleric, plus whatever is specified by the prestige class.

If you look under the note for Multiclassing in the Class section of the Core rules, you'll find that unless otherwise stated, class abilities are tied to levels in that class for determination of their effects. Mind you, I'm paraphrasing badly, so I'd go look it up.

Also, point of game-design logic. Paizo wanted to make staying single-classed more enticing than it was in 3.5. So it gave clerics niftier domain powers and the ability to channel energy. If gaining levels in just any ol' PrC boosted your domain powers, then you've just lost one of the 2 main reasons (channel energy being the other) to stay a single-classed cleric. That would be a bit backwards, dontcha think?

You have a similar state of affairs with bards (not getting better at singing and not being able to sing as often.) Multi-classing is a lot less fun than in 3.5
