I'm facing a very difficult desicion and I really could use advice. I'm debating if I go or not to GenCon this year...the "problem" is this:
Wayfinder #1 got an ENnie nomination and of course I'd LOVE to go and be present at the ENnies ceremony -win or not-. I WF wins...well, no explanation required. If not, I think the nomination is good enough to be of some leverage to introduce myself around try to make new contacts and hopefully more work in the future.
On the other hand... That's at least a $1000 trip and this is a VERY considerable unexpected expense, one that thank Gosh I can cover, but that's $1000 that I could use to pay off several debts.
Who knows if I'll ever have the chance again to get a nomination, let alone get the Award (dreamy!)... Could this "fresh" nomination be of any leverage to try and make contacts? Is it worth the unplanned expense?... My biggest question is: Why am I thinking this so hard?
SO! What would you do? :(

You should go. As someone who has lived a while, you'll never regret spending that $1000. Oh, you might wish you had it once in a while, but you'll definitely regret not going. In the end, a lost experience is always a greater regret than lost money.

I agree 101% with that too, and thats the biggest reason I'm still considering going...

I think you should try to make it work. I'd love to see you there to accept your ENnie with Liz!

Thats a very good point. The main reason to still consider going would be a chance to meet new people that you just didn't get to meet at PaizoCon and to see a different sort of Con. There is, of course, always the chance to network and make more contacts.
The folks who are really interested in contacting you though, will find a way (provided you make contacting you easy and possible). Just getting the nomination for Wayfinder is amazing and will get the word out about this product, especially to the folks who aren't such avid followers of the messageboards here and what goes on.
In the end, only you can weigh what is best Hugo. That is a lot of money, but it certainly could be a lot of fun and net you some new contacts and friends. Good luck on the voting, whatever you decide to do.

Whatever you decide with regard to your finances, go to GenCon only because you want to go to GenCon, not because you want to spend one evening attending the Ennie awards. (If the purpose of your trip is solely to attend the Ennies then stay over for just the one night of the Ennies, and save yourself on accommodation and the admission fees for multiple days.)
As to finances, how bad is your debt situation? Paying off debts as soon as possible eliminates interest payments and other charges, meaning you only pay them once or twice instead of for month after month after month.... How comfortably off are you? How much difference does having to make those monthly payments make? Do you have a friend who can lend you money interest free, or absolutely insane good friends prepared to pay for you to head to Indianapolis? How will your boss react to a sudden holiday request at short notice? Are you a hard-headed businessman or a free-spirited artist? And (most important of all) what does Mrs. Butterfrog think?
I don't know if that helps, but that's the best 'serious' advice I can give. More biased advice will follow shortly from an alias...

Dear Mr. Butterfrog,
If you love crimes and punishment, beat up a moneylender, take her cash, then have a guilt-trip, hide the cash under a stone and don't ever spend a penny of it. Then later confess it all to the authorities as part of a mental breakdown, and take a trip to a Russian prison.Okay, on a more serious note, just make sure that whatever you do it involves lots of tanar'ri. Or other residents of the Abyss if you're not a second edition guy.
Well what other advice did you think that I was going to give you?
Hoping that this advice is Helpful.
Yours,
Ask A Succubus.

And (most important of all) what does Mrs. Butterfrog think?
Actually, to my surprise and GREAT happiness, MRS Butterfrog is "ok" with me going. She's not thrilled about it and certainly would like me NOT going but she game me green light if I decided to go. This means the world to me for that's how supportive she can be. I shed a tiny tear of join when she said "yes".
The money issue ain't that big. For the first time in several years I'm approaching out of the red numbers. I could go without loaning money or getting into deep trouble for not paying debts. In the other hand, the money I would spend would get me a lot closer to be out of debts and a lot more at peace with myself. Who knows, maybe I'm finally starting to grow up? :D

Well, it is decided. I'll have to skip the COn this time. I hope we Paizo Fans United keep up the quality and push another Wayfidner into the ENnies and try not to miss that time :)
It is a biz opportunity and maybe a lifetime experience but I'm really hoping to do the "mature" thing here and take care of the debts before anything else. I really have my hopes up to get another opportunity to be at the ENnies (dreams come for free!)
Thanks for the advice!
*sends good vibe to Liz*

I didn't want to pipe in earlier, but that would've been my advice. Being debt free is a liberating experience that can open up better opportunities in the long run over instant gratification (being what gets people into debt issues to begin with).
Plus, from the sounds of it, it'll make Mrs. Butterfrog happier.
All that said, here's to your nom this year and too more noms in the future (so you can eventually go to the ceremony).

Jeps, that's exactly how I feel. The moment I decided not to go, a huge weight was lifted off my back (and my wallet).
Mrs. BF is certainly SUPER happy I'm not going exactly because of the same.
Thanks for the good thoughts!
