I've created a trait for one of my players. He's playing a dwarf ranger and has chosen Magical Beasts as his favored enemy. The problem was that he didn't have Knowledge (arcana) as a class skill, which made it kind of tough for him to identify the creatures he's supposed to know the most about.

I came up with a trait based on the Mathematical Prodigy trait. The new trait grants a +1 bonus on Knowledge (arcana) and Knowledge (nature) checks and makes one of them a class skill. Since he's already got Knowledge (nature), the choice is obvious, plus he gets the +1 bonus to both skills.

My question is, what should I call it? I've already named it "Zoologist," but that seems too broad, since there are living creatures that would need knowledge (dungeoneering) to identify them, too.

Any ideas for a better name? Or should I just leave it as it is?

cryptozoologist?

Arcane Naturalist or perhaps Arcane Hunter?

You could also make it a trait that gives a +1 to KNO:nature or arcane or dungeoneering and make the choice a class skill. That way it could be handy for aberration foes too.

Thanks for the help, BT & Spanky.

I had thought about that, as well. Most traits don't go that far. They only provide bonuses to 2 skills. I suppose I could allow the player to choose 2 of the three. I realize that I could do anything I want to for this game, but I like to stay close to established guidelines, if I can.

Cryptozoologist might be a good choice, actually. Then I would definitely have to give bonuses to all three skills. ;)

Cool; I wasn't entirely sure if it was cool or not.

Hello, FaWTL thread. How are you doing? You might not remember me, but I used to post in here a lot. Life got in the way recently, so I haven't been around for a couple of months.

I'll be back tomorrow. Right now, I'm going to get some sleep.

I believe the alchemist and the druid will be able to heal. There are seven of us and the GM. I'll be surprised if we'll get anything launched this evening as we're supposed to wrap up between 9 - 10pm ET and it's minutes after 8 now.

LOL! Organizing a group that size can be challenging like herding cats depending on the group. Where are you guys gaming?

We're playing at the GM's house who lives just three miles down the road from me. Convenient for me! He's going to invest in a folding table in the next several weeks to support the size of the group participating.

Wall of Text:

Here's what we have: human (taldan) ranger (from Andoran, my PC), human (chelaxian) fighter, human (chelaxian) rogue, gnome witch, elf druid, elf dragonfire adept, and a goblin alchemist. He actually asked if he could play it. He was sitting right next to me. I casually told him that he was my favored enemy and I could whack at him at +7 if he steps out of line. :P Apparently, he statted himself with an 18 INT and will be Neutral. The GM is going to watch and wait and see how he goes to see if he can actually RP the PC w/o being a confrontational liability. IMHO, he better have his chops up quickly to explain why we're going to spare his life when we reconvene next week.

All the GM did to get us together was that we were on a caravan headed toward Elidir in Isger when we were attacked by a band of goblinoids. The seven of us are the only survivors. What do we do from there? He also gave us a heads up that the campaign we're heading into won't have all that available downtime to build/craft/solo/etc because there will be events occurring at a moment's notice and we will not have time to waste. We all have a week to work on our PC background and turn that in next visit. Each person that turns one in brings in a group XP. It will be curious to see who does and who does not. I already got an outline for mine so I'll start putting that together tomorrow.

As much as I've enjoyed a night out each week to play a 'beer & pretzels' roll-play game, I'm actually looking forward more to a campaign that will have a engaging storyline. <crosses fingers>

I try to roll my guy up then have an "escape plan." Unless it's interesting.

I was the only one done prior to arrival. It's essentially introducing a bunch of people to Pathfinder and explain the difference between that and 3.5, so I was there to assist in the translation (primarily the expenditure of skill points) and also explain the concept of traits.

I let the GM gloss over my sheet; he was good with it.

Reading is fundamental if they had the books. Integration and interest is key. In the meantime, we're directing them to the PRD and PFSRD as well as letting those who may not have the PDFs that they can pick it up at a reasonable price.

Personally, I'm looking forward to be able to play in Golarion at last.

I'm Andoran. Former slave bullied by goblinoids. I have a missing sibling. Intending to join the Eagle Knights of the Twilight Talons. We're going to be playing Red Hand of Doom. And we will start off being the only survivors from a goblinoid raid on our caravan.

That's what I'm thinking too. I gave him a heads up that he better think fast with that 18 INT and his Neutral alignment why I will not slay him right there. I'm going to remind him before we begin next Sunday because I don't want to be a complete prick, but if he's not wearing any armor & we're all starting at 1st level, I already have him at a +7 to attack and 2d6+8 dmg from my greatsword; I will do a minimum of 10 hp of dmg on him.

THWACK!

Sad Paris is Sad.

I realized this weekend that the dates for PaizoCon 2011 coincide with the final weekend of Portland Rose Festival.

It is very likely that the Navy staff to which I will be reporting in April has responsibilities associated with the Rose Festival, which will keep me from participating in PaizoCon.

That's not 100% certain, but it seems likely that I won't be able to attend this year. I'm very much bummed about this revelation. :(

Well, this week's game has the DM making up for not having killed off my character's family up to now. Already down three family members and there are still at least two assassins on the loose. Next week should be interesting....

And cryptozoologist does sound like a cool name for that trait.

And with that I should probably go get some sleep.
