Resting time and elfs

Rules Questions

I could not find an rules in the book regarding rest. What happens if you wake up during your sleep by some monsters? Do you have to sleep 8 hours again? Do elves need only 4 hours like in the old rules? How many days can you stay without sleep?

Interesting! I never noticed that bit left out with the conversion! About the elves that is. I have an inkling that it was done intentionally.

And about the 8 hours of rest thing, you don't need these hours to be consecutive. Otherwise most spellcasters could never serve anything other than first or last watch on guard duty.

Edit: The RAW goes on to say
"If his rest is interrupted, each interruption adds 1 hour to the total amount of time he has to rest in order to clear his mind, and he must have at least 1 hour of uninterrupted rest immediately prior to preparing his spells. If the character does not need to sleep for some reason, he still must have 8 hours of restful calm before preparing any spells."

To directly answer the OP's first question. if a caster is interrupted during the night by a monster encounter he needs to sleep an extra hour to make up for the interruption.

One other thing to note... Any spells CAST during that interruption mean a reduction to the number of the applicable spell slots that can be refreshed the next day. If he casts fireball and magic missle during the encounter, he refreshes one less first and third level spell. as that would be within the last 8 hours. (Good reasons to break out the wands if they will get the job done)

As for penalties of going without sleep entirely, note the following.

1. Without the above rest, no spell slots get replenished.

2. Note the rules for fatigue, exhaustion, and nonlethal damage due to overexertion.

While the CRB doesn't state anything about elf resting time Elves of Golarion does. "Though elves are immune to magical sleep effects, the
idea that they never rest is a myth. Instead, though they do not fall unconscious the way other humanoids do, elves may enter a deep trance that has the same refreshing effect on the mind as human sleep. An elf only needs to meditate in this fashion for 4 hours per day, though some prefer longer periods."
So there you have it, Elves still meditate for only 4 hours.

Elves of Golarion was for 3.5 edition. In the Pathfinder rules, elves have lost the 4-hour transe and need their 8 hours of sleep like anyone else.

This has been addressed in other threads. IIRC James Jacobs said that they'd deliberately left the verbiage on elven sleep/trance/reverie out for GMs to deal with on their own.

Oh, and one other note. Elves of Golarion is for Golarion. If you're not playing there, then the note about 4 hours of trance need not apply.

As stated above Elves of Golarion was 3.5 and it has been stated a few times by someone at paizo this is no longer canon. Elves sleep like everyone else it seems.
