Something I just don't get about movement (doors)

So, my fighter has a standard range of 30 feet. Now with that 30 feet of movement, I can either 1. open a door, or 2. move halfway across a room.

I just think it's asinine that opening a door would take up a full movement. I could see it costing a portion of your movement, such as 10' of your overall, just not the whole thing.

I make it a free action in my game. If it's a pair of double doors, opening both is a move action, and if the doors are larger than two squares then opening one is a move.

Generally handwaved though.

If the door opens outwards (in the direction you are going) I make it a swift action.

If the door opens inwards (towards the opener) I make it count as 10 ft. of movement.

If the door is stuck or locked, it may take from one standard action to many rounds, to several minutes to open.

A round is 6 seconds, go ahead and go up to a closed door and try to open it and get through it as fast as possible. I will bet it takes you at least 2 seconds. Now think about trying to do that with an unfamiliar door, maybe one where you don't even know which way it swings or how heavy it is. Go ahead and tack on another 1 second there.

However I do see your point, these ARE heroes, adventurers. They can bench press a VW Fire Beetle, and beat Mace Windu at 3-D chess. I get it, personally I would have it take half of your movement to open a door. If you spent more movement than that getting there, feel free to continue opening it, but you just lost your standard action.

You're not wrong. But... that is what bothers you about this game? :D

It takes a move action to open a door, but I'll allow other ways to get through a door more quickly, such as smashing it open at a charge. The PC has to successfully smash the door open, but I'll allow a charge bonus to the roll.

I have other issues too (as much as I love this game) but that was the one recently my mind.

The house rule in my game is that it still is a move action to open a door, but you can use your other move action to move before and after opening it.

So you could move 10 ft., open a door, then move another 20 ft. as both your move actions.

+1, I don't see a huge problem with it taking about 3 seconds of your 6 second round, it seems fair enough to me.. getting it to take fraction of movement seems to get too complicated for races with different movement.

Thus the blanket ruling that it takes a move action to open a door. Allowing it as a free action, or even a swift action does not reasonably express the amount of time you must take to use a door.

One of the many reasons breaching teams have 1 guy breach the door, then the rest of the team enter. Though I really really like the concept of using a portion of your movement to open the door vice an action. I may start using that!! Especially for chase scenes.
