Homebrew and House Rules

a girl in my group was always singing this song about wanting to be an airborne ranger. so i recently came up with this prestige class based on a literal meaning of an airborne ranger. tell me what you think.

then i apologize but besides what do you think of the actual class?

Liberty's Edge RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2013 Top 16

Only needs 2 abilities:

1. featherfall at will
2. whoop ass

Ok first thing, why the restriction to elves and half-elves? That makes no sense. Paizo has been trying to remove this concept in most PrCs and I for one think its a good idea. Besides I see Humans as being more likely to fly around the battle than an Elf or Half-Elf.

Secondly, I don't really understand why the class gets the ability to fly. I understand that it's an "airborne ranger" but to just randomly give players the ability to fly with no thematic reason seems odd to me. I'm just that kind of DM I suppose. A better theme might be that the class allows the player to feather fall from a great height onto the battlefield. As a matter of fact, I probably would start them off with a feather fall ability and then add the flight later. Another thing about the flight ability is to just allow them to fly without the wing component much like the magic item Celestial Armor (which by the way gives a player the main thing this class can do).

You might want to say something about using the flight ability must be used in 1 round increments or something like that because that is how those abilities are usually templated.

What is the purpose of "Airborne Fighter" ability?

Overall this PrC seems to come off as a Fighter/Ranger/Rogue which is a little more diverse than your standard PrC. Also, it almost makes little sense to be any class other than a Ranger before going into this class. I mean sure you could be a Fighter/Rogue and meet all of the prereqs but why would you? In the end it seems just a bit unbalanced in the long term and while it seems like a novel idea right now, if and when you allow a player to use said class you may end up regretting it.

If you are a tl/dr kind of guy here's the cliff notes:
* The main class ability of flight can be gained through a magic item
* It doesn't make a lot of thematic sense (i.e. random gain of flight/restricted to elves/half-elves)
* Needs different wording to match current templating
* I'm confused about the purpose of the "Airborne Fighter" ability
* Overall it seems a tad unbalanced

BTW, the reason I hate this joke is because I had a player in my group who continually wanted to play a ranger so he could purchase celestial armor and fly around singing that song. It was quite annoying.

both comments are well noted and i will make adjustments as i see fit. keep the comments coming

Well that is a given...but could you answer my question?

JMD031 got just about everything I picked up.

Might wanna write some fluff as to why they are randomly growing wings and stuff. (That "Special" category in the requirement section is your best friend)

Like if it was some divine sorta thing (or infernal) role that made they quazi-angelic or whatever (like a step TOWARDS being an angle or whatever) that would be cool.

If you are going a special ops sorta route and where just doing this as a "lol" class- I'd take Charlie Bell's advice and just give it featherfall at will and add a requirement that they be able to cast featherfall.
