Saurian

The Saurian’s are a reptilian humanoid race of hunters and trackers, They stand on average at 5 feet tall weighing in at around 160lbs. Their skin comes in almost every color and their eyes are usually yellow, they have slits instead of noses and no ears and small sharp needle like teeth. The Saurian’s are thin and lanky but are stronger than they look, their tongues are forked and grow little to no hair on their head with no body hair at all. They have long thin tails and four fingers on their hands.

The Saurian’s come from jungles and rain forests living simple tribal lives.

Saurian racial traits
+2 Dex
+2 Wis
-2 Cha
Normal Speed 30ft
Darkvision 60ft
Scentless
Keen Senses +2 Perception
Hunter +2 Survival

Scentless
The Saurian’s have no sweat glands and no scent glands so they have no natural scent of their own, this makes it impossible to track or notice the saurian’s by scent.

no thoughts?

There was a dinosaur race in a Dragon Magazine like this, but there were separated into different categories: bladebacks, finheads, flyers, and hornheads...I think that is what they were. They were pretty cool, I'm trying to convert them into a race for my setting.

actually they are more of a reptile race, i just couldn't think of a better name.

I like the race. They're like a better lizardfolk.

Edit: Though I'm not an expert on making races, but i think the scentless is a little much.

Not to mention they would still be track-able by things found on them or that they came into contact that might have a scent, such as mud, clothes, plant matter, etc.

I like scentless. Unique. I did file off the serial numbers on a lot of giants and turned them into dino-men known as...reptites. ;-)

They look fun. What sort of society do they have? Mechanics are boring without massive two pages of ecology.

i see it as a minor ability seeing as how they could still be tracked by sight, all it really applies to is those creatures with the scent ability don't auto notice them, its not something that comes up all of the time plus more than likely they would smell like where ever they are.

They have a tribal society ruled over by a priestess, they value stealth and secrets and lying as virtues of a good hunter, they work well as spies and assassins. they keep their villages secret and hidden and would kill anyone who trespasses.

if there is anything else you would like to know let me know, i cant think of anything else to write down at the moment.

Ok, I guess I can see how the scentless ability will work. So, I say go for it.

While the core game has plenty of examples of all of nothing abilities like this (elven immunities to sleep and charm, for instance), I prefer giving flat bonuses instead of 'always works' abilities. In this case, it even makes a bit of sense, since the PC itself being scentless wouldn't prevent odors from the surrounding terrain from clinging to it's scales or clothing or gear.

Some sort of flat DC penalty to attempts to track by scent (or cancelling out any bonus that a creature has to track by scent), and requiring a Perception/Survival check to attempt to pinpoint location (instead of just doing so automatically, per the standard scent rules) might be one way to handle it.

I instantly thought you were doing a conversion of the Forgotten Realms novel. (Spellfire I think) Saurials. (those are the ones in Dragon magazine. )

Might just try to rename them, using Latin names for lizards, here are some examples:

Horned Lizards: Phyrnosoma
Water Dragons: Physignathus
Skink: Eumeces
Spiny Lizard: Sceloporus
Monitor: Varanus

i don't wish to just shoot down your idea but i prefer to go with the (always on) sort of ability for them. i have discussed this sort of ability before with my group and we all seem to like it like this. your thoughts are appreciated though.

those are some nice ideas for names i really don't like what i went with so i might just use one of those.

I think the monitor and spiny lizard ones are probably the best...
