So, just finished reading Batman #700 and I must say I'm disappointed. In fact, I've been disappointed with all of Grant Morrison's Batman work to date. His style is a bit disjointed for my taste when it comes to mainstream super-hero books, and he shows this at its worst in this book.
The way he jumps from timeline to timeline in this book makes it hard to follow the plot (if there even is one) of the Joker's Joke Book.
If you haven't picked it up, do yourself a favor and don't. If you have picked it up, and feel I'm missing something, I'd love to hear what it is so I can possibly enjoy the drivel that is Batman #700.
Right now, I'm anxiously awaiting the day Grant Morrison leaves super-heroes and returns to Vertigo/Self-created mystical stories.
YMMV.

It's Grant Morrison, friend. What did you expect, honestly? He's just not made for standard cape and tights fare, ESPECIALLY when dealing with iconic characters. Let him drop his acid all over storylines that are meant to be weird and avant garde. Mosaic by Morrison, now THAT I would have spent money on.

One redeeming moment. Batman (Dick) and Robin (Damien) beat the heck out of a gang of toughs, and Batman uses his Escrima sticks. After they're done.
"Wow. Remind me to pack these [the sticks] more often." I like Dick Greyson/Nightwing, so I hope this means he won't join Wally in Limbo when Bruce returns.

I'll add myself to the crowd that was disappointed with Batman 700.
Dick is nice as Batman, even though I'm still a fan of Bruce. However I think the best bat-book right now is Red Robin. I really like how Tim is doing.
It's interesting- I really don't care for Red Robin. Which is strange, considering how much I LOVE Tim and what he's done as Robin over the years. Red Robin just feels like a cop out to me. And I"m not a fan of the costume. I much preferred the hodge podge he had when he first came out or the Gatchaman inspired one he had a few years back.
ANd where are his R-shaped throwing stars!??!?!?!?

I just started in on RR with 13, I'll get the trades for 1-12.
It's interesting, I like Dick and Tim more than Bruce at this point. Of course I might be biased. When I split with my wife, I said that I needed some time to just be Matt, not followed by 'and...' Paraphrasing Dick when he left the Robin identity.
Best way to solve the 'I know who Batman is' confusion.

Here's what I'd like to see:
- Bruce Wayne either retires as an active Batman and takes up a mentoring/behind the scenes role, leaving Dick to remain as Batman.
or
- As Mattew said, have both Bruce and Dick be Batman, but occasionally at the same time. This way he can seem to be in more than one place at a time, thus adding to the mystery.
Also, kill the Damien character. He's an annoying little ass who doesn't deserve to be a part of the legacy. This is a character who should never have existed, and is one of Morrison's primary sins.
Dick and Tim are Batman's sons and rightful heirs - that should be more than enough.

Does Bruce Wayne need anymore angst? Can we readers handle him having any more than he has? My answer is no.
Seriously, the only person who should be behind Bruce Wayne in the angst line is Scott Summers.

Yeah, but they need someone to replace the dead Jason Todd. Can't believe they brought that little f~@%er back either. What the hell good did my vote to kill him do?

He provides enough angst just by having turned into a villain. You only stay dead in the DC universe if you are Barry Allen.........
That rule seems to have changed too.
You only stay dead if you died in character background..........
No, they brought Krypton back too.
You only stay dead long enough for the writer to change.

Bucky should have stayed dead, damnit!
+1

Just Buckey?
Bucky and Uncle Ben were the constants in the Marvel universe. Though I agree, I'd have liked Toro to stay dead too, and James Hudson. I'm actually ok with Doug Ramsey's resurrection. It's been years and does tie into his powers (as well as 'Locks and Illyana's) Illyana's 'resurrection' makes sense too.
I'm a bit miffed with Mockingbird's but for continuity reasons.

Waitaminute. Uncle Ben, as in Peter Parker's (aka Spider-Man) Uncle Ben Parker is alive? You have got to be s****ing me. This is actually worse than what Spider-Man 3 did to Peter's origin story. So what's Peter's motivation to be Spider-Man now? Oh its cool to swing from buildings? God I am so glad I quit seriously following comics back in the late 90's.

No, Uncle Ben's still dead. I didn't mean to imply otherwise. It just used to be the gold standard was Uncle Ben and Bucky. But now the later's back.

Just read it. It was okay but pretty average for a milestone 700th issue. Is it just me or does anyone else feel disappointed lately with superhero DC and Marvel comics? I've been reading/collecting comics for over twenty-five years now. There are a lot of great comic artists now but often the storylines are poor. The whole Batman RIP storyline was disjointed and very confusing to read. I'm enjoying the Batman and Robin series (it's fresh and stand alone so far). I'm looking forward to the Avengers relaunch!

I'm reading Secret Avengers for Steve, and Justice league for Dick and Donna. BoP I just got into, but I like Barbara, even if DC wants her to be their token 'handicapable' character. Likewise, I suffer through Teen Titans for Cassie, Virgil, Gar, Raven and M'gann (though I hope the writing gets better this fall). I also want Rose and Tim back in.
I think that's part of it for me. I read comics for the characters under the masks, not so much the masks. Steve Rogers is Captain America, even without the shield and outfit. It doesn't matter if Dick is Batman or Nightwing, or Dick Greyson. I read him for the character.
That said in the Thor/Iron Man/Captain America Avengers thing, who didn't smile a bit when Steve beat the snot out of the goblins, and then picked up the round shield?
Batman aside. I like Tim Drake because he actually sought out becoming Robin. Dick was taken in after tragedy, Jason was taken in after trying to steal the tires off the Batmobile. Tim actually went, "Hmm, Dick Greyson was Robin, so Batman must be Bruce Wayne, let me prove that. Ok, I've proved that. Jason Todd died, and now Batman's solo again. His behaviour is erratic, so he needs a Robin to balance him out. I'm volunteering."

Behind? Damn, I think Scott is AHEAD of Bruce. His ex is basically Schrodinger's cat...nobody in the Marvel universe knows if she's alive or dead until she actually appears in a story. She's also had clones...clones ARE angst, just ask Peter Parker. Almost everyone in his family has either died, or turned evil. Frequently both. Often multiple times. Almost nobody trusts his current girlfriend, and they question his judgement because of her. He quite often discovers that he has new siblings that he didn't know about previously. Except for the first time this happened (Havok), they've all turned out to be ridiculously powerful and eventually evil. His friends have a habit of dying. Sometimes they come back, but that just makes it even tougher emotionally when they die again. The man he idolized from his teenage years well into adulthood was (fairly) recently revealed to have done a lot of things that he considers rather dispicable. As such, the man who became the reluctant FIELD leader of the X-Men finds himself in the position of being the OVERALL leader as well. And dispite M-Day, this still puts him in charge of a ridiculous amount of different teams/people.

I just read this, and all I can say is:
You won Grant Morrison. I am too dumb to read comics. I can't follow this at all. I feel like I should know what is going on, but I don't. I'm really, really glad that DC allowed a landmark issue like Batman 700 to contain a story that proves the absolute genius of Grant Morrison.
While I wasn't thrilled with Wonder Woman 600, at least there were several "tribute" stories and it was pretty obvious that the last story was a reset of the character for some story arc.
My brain hurts.

Well, speaking for myself, I'm enjoying a great deal of DC Comics currently. I really enjoyed the "BLACKEST NIGHT" event, and so far I'm liking the "BRIGHTEST DAY" arc. I'm really glad that several of my favorite superheroes are among the living once again, but they aren't having a "happy sunshine time of it", and if you are reading Brightest Day then you know what I mean.
I couldn't be happier that Barry Allen is back as the Flash. (Wally was around for a good deal of time even with Barry recently back) he was in the "Flash:Rebirth" mini-series, and he was also in the "Blackest Night" (but then again who wasn't). :P Granted, we haven't seen Wally lately (although Barry is up-to-his-armpits in trouble in his new monthly title). I doubt Geoff Johns has forgotten Mr. West (or Mr. Garrick, or Mr. Mercury) I'm sure we will be seeing all of the DC speedsters in due time.
Now, I did buy issue 700 of Batman... and while not as disappointed with it as many (maybe I'm easier to please?, I'm certainly not smarter) I can understand some of the disappointment.
Well... that's just my two cents worth.

I guess I still have fond memories of the first "hundreds" issue I ever purchased as a comic book collector under the Batman family of titles, Batman 500, which featured a Ra's al Ghul story and just about every bad guy Batman had ever run into.
Sure, it was invalidated in a few months by the Crisis reboot and Year One, but I still loved that issue.

I'm loving Secret Six, and I'm cautiously happy with Green Lantern, but I could get sick of the whole storyline being about the rainbow lanterns really quick. I've actually been enjoying Flash as well, although if you would have asked me a year ago if I was okay with Barry coming back, I would have ranted heavily.
Blackest Night was a really good series, but I'm not completely sold on Brightest Day yet, but it hasn't turned me off yet.
But I'm really not happy with the Trinity right now . . . Superman wandering across country, Wonder Woman rebooted into an alternate history, and whatever they are going to do to straighten out the mess caused by Bruce's death and return, plus the mess it makes of other books, like Justice League . . . no, not thrilled with that.
