It's a matter of priorities. If you start putting things like your wedding higher in priority than a 'con, you'll soon be reduced to a drained shell of a man, playing HER favorite RPGs instead of painfully macho settings like Delta Green or old GDW titles.

So help me, it's going to be GenCon this year. Origins is now out as I'll be out of town when all of the good stuff goes down (I live in Columbus) and it's best not to cross the boss. Hopefully my geek sacrificing will open the door for the grand événement of them all.
I'll go Friday or Saturday most likely, for the vendor area. W/o Paizo there, the only company I go to try to geek with is Catalyst, and their sales model of late, as well as the rampant cheating in the Historicals, has really bummed me out the past few years.
Well that and the entire 'can only handle crowds for short durations without doulbing up on meds' thing.
I'd shoot for GenCon, but I'm planning to go to FL for a couple weeks late this fall, so I need all my resources there.

Every year, Catalyst/Fan Pro/Fasa/Whatever they are this week, runs 'historical' games. Massive battles that take place in canon, and usually the outcome of which flavors the books when they're written.
I've seen such things as ammo 'suddenly' changing types, to people 'forgetting' certain equipment doesn't work that way, to forgetting to calculate heat correctly.
Then I've seen just plain unsportsman like conduct. The one that soured me was a wraith with both arms missing (i.e. weaponless) going for a Death From Above on a mech. Depending on if he made the roll or not, it was going to force the target off the board (i.e. kill it). Bones said if it worked that the player would definately 'earn a place in the sourcebook'.
In response the entire Op-For opened up on this one mech, with the sole intent of killing it to deny him a mention in a book. Very unsportsmanlike to me.
I've seen grown men tearing through rule books to try to fight a ruling by the Commandos that went against them. (direct artillary fire taking out two high speed hover craft) and still griping after they lost.
Maybe it's me. I go to Origins to play Battletech, knowing I'm outclassed by maybe 70% of the people there. (I used to call the Open the 'Annual Matt gets his aft handed to him event') I try (not always succeed) to be a sportsman, and I take defeat in good stride because I don't expect to win. To see grown men (most of the Battletech players range from 25-60) acting like whiny 6 year olds annoys me. Heck, I've conceeded once in a historical just because it would screw up the subsequent scenarios

Just curious what you have against the first season/a good chunk of the second season of Andromeda? I actually liked them a lot. It was when it became 'The Kevin Sorbo show' that it went downhill.
Though this was still my favourite line:

Rommie: No , I'm better .
That or the bit about why Tyr knows how to cook.
Which reminds me. This guy for Lucas Bishop.

Unfortunately, this kind of behavior at Origins isn't restricted to one area. My buddy and I used to go every year, and we'd play Warhammer Fantasy, War Machine, various historical miniature games, etc. It would never fail that at least one out of three sessions we would participate in would come to either a halt or an argument because of either poor sportsmanship or an attempt to cheat. Heck, we even entered an Anachronism tournament (anyone remember that card game?) and someone got caught cheating by one of the judges. We haven't been back in a few years, but we will probably stick to the RPGs in the future. The evening Call of Cthulhu events are always a blast!

+1 on the KHC playing Bishop bit.
I just didn't care for it, due to the overwhelming similarities between the Nieztchians and the Clans(interestingly enough considering our experiences with BT/MW), as well as a half dozen other ideas that came out of other known niche SF/Fantasy fare. I don't have the list in front of me right now, but it was enough to truly throw me off from the series- it was too much hodgepodge, not enough originality. But then again, as I am frequently told offline, I am a mean and bitter old man.

Honestly? Unlike RPGs you can win and lose.
I've made the occasional faux pas at these games.
I pulled my remaining units (Blask Hawk-Ku, Spector, Wraith) out of the woods and over to another clump of hilly woods. He asked me why I pulled back.
I said "Well I've a Large Laser and a LPL still, all your weapons top out at range 9. So like the Offspring say "Hey hey hey! Come out and play!" I was mortified as soon as the words left my lips and I immediately appologized.
Another open I played 'chicken bone' offence.
The meanest trick I ever saw was against the 'comic-town mafia' here in Columbus.
One of them was playing against a player from Dayton. The Dayton guy found out his Mafia opponent couldn't have kids. He started talking about his kids, them learning to walk, first day of kindergarden etc. Had the guy in tears by the time he lost. Was it cruel? Oh yes. Did the guy deserve it? I think so. This is the same guy who would put headphones on and listen to music and talk smack during the game.

Matthew's hit it right on the head. It comes down to winning and losing. There are some people who have a "win at all costs" mentality, and have no concept of sportsmanship.
My 11 year old nephew is becoming like that, much to my chagrin. I've played a few games with him and talked to him after each session if he gets over the top with the smack. I tell him that if he's a poor winner or a poor loser, eventually he won't be able to find anyone willing to play with him. He's unconcerned, as it seems his friends are the same way.
I'm introducing him slowly to D&D, where there is no "win or lose", so hopefully he'll start to see my point.

Note: I must fully admit I'm a TERRIBLE loser. I truly hate it, and I've been admonished about it before. Now that I'm older and mellower(HA!), I can take losses and victories with equal aplomb, mainly becasue I hated both losing AND being the guy who couldn't take losing and had to make a choice between the two.

I think what changed for me was when I realized I learned when I lost.
When I won usually it was because something went sideways quickly. As a result I didn't always get as much out of a win like that. But when it was a loss, I took away from it my mistakes and learned not to repeat them.
Part of it also is with RPGs, you 'win' when you learn to balance things out. If you've designed something that can do everyone's role, you're doing it wrong. You might 'win' in that the DM has to escalate the rules to make it challenging, but you lose as well when you make it stop being fun for the players/GM.
A winning class/race/item in D&D is something that makes you go 'I'd like that' but not 'I'd need that'. I think that's part of the problem with splat escalation. Writer X sees prestige class Y and decides to make Prestige class Z better (case in point, Eldrich Knight vs. Abjurant Champion. A perfect example where turning it up to 11 doesn't make it better). RPGs promote co-operation, moreso than tabletop games.
The last time I really had fun at a historical was when I got the battle armor. No one liked them (and they were Purifiers, which I hate) but because of the scenario, I was able to turn an objective into a death trap. I crippled one mech, and swarmed and killed another. After that, people just conceeded the objective. Everyone was a little humbled by that. (won best player for two rounds, and best player overall) But what I learned was teamwork, I didn't need to drive the biggest and best machine, I didn't need to make all the kills, just carry out my part of the plan. If I'd been trying to play solo, to 'win' by killing the most mechs we'd have lost the scenario.

What's wrong with purifiers again? I don't remember.
And overall, this latter story was why I went whole hog into Dark Ages- forget the mixed-unit/enhanced lance/clan star tactics that I loved- it was an end to the "biggest is always the best" philosophy that had kept me away from the game for many, many years.

They suck!
Seriosuly, they have that mimnetic coating thing so they're easier to hit the more they move. I love my infiltrator II units instead.
The last revision of Battletech (Total War/Tech Manual/Tactical Ops/Stratigic Ops/Interstellar Ops(not released yet)/Time of War (the RPG)) does a much better job of balancing (if you ignore one rule) I've found equal points of vehicles can hold their own with equal numbers of mechs. And unarmoured infantry is dangerous now, in the right circumstances.

Then what was their up side? I remember them being cool in DA for some reason.
And yeah, this may be Time of War catching up to/nodding towards DA philosophy regarding non-mech based combat.
